Multidimensional Poverty in India since 2005-06: Report by NITI Aayog

According to the NITI Aayog discussion paper on ‘Multidimensional Poverty in India since 2005-06’ there are 24.82 crore people who escaped multidimensional Poverty in the last nine years from 2013-14 to 2022-23 and this discussion paper gives credit to the government’s various initiatives dealt with Poverty across the state.

Prof Ramesh Chand, Member, NITI Aayog in presence of Shri B. V. R. Subrahmanyam, CEO NITI Aayog has released the discussion paper ‘Multidimensional Poverty in India since 2005-06’. Oxford Policy and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have provided technical support to this discussion paper released by NITI Aayog.

More findings:

As per the report, India has witnessed a significant growth in terms of multidimensional Poverty declination from 29.17% in 2013-14 to 11.28% in 2022-23. There has been around 17.89 percent reduction in the last nine years. Uttar Pradesh recorded a robust growth in the number of people escaping multidimensional Poverty as around 5.94 crore people escaped multidimensional Poverty in the period of the last nine years. Bihar followed Uttar Pradesh at 3.77 crore followed by Madhya Pradesh at 2.30 crore and Rajasthan at 1.87 crore respectively.

The 12 indicators of Multidimensional Poverty Index have witnessed a significant growth in the last nine years across the country, as per the discussion paper by NITI Aayog. The government’s dedicated initiatives especially covering all dimensions of Poverty in India have led to around 24.82 crore people escaping multidimensional Poverty in the period of last nine years. It can be stated that India is likely to be on the right way to achieve the SDG target of reducing multidimensional poverty by at least half by 2030 even a much ahead.

Important initiatives for Poverty eradication:

Poshan Abhiyan and Anemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyan dealing with the healthcare and nutrition of the citizens of India have played a robust role in terms of decrease in deprivation. Another important initiative which is one of the largest food security programs in the world, Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana covers around 81.35 beneficiaries across the country under the National Food Security Act. Government has also decided to extend the program for another five years and it shows the commitment of the government to eradicate Poverty from the country.

Some other important initiatives which helped India to witness a significant growth in terms of multidimensional Poverty declination are Ujjwala Yojana for clean cooking fuel distribution, Saubhagya yojana for electricity coverage, Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission for enhancing the living conditions of citizens and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and PM Awas Yojana for financial inclusion and affordable Housing are played a crucial role in poverty eradication.

The discussion paper ‘Multidimensional Poverty in India since 2005-06’ by NITI Aayog has showcased the high growth and remarkable progress the country made in poverty eradication. This also fosters the country’s commitment towards Viksit Bharat @2047.
