National Mathematics Day: December 22nd

On December 22 India celebrates National Mathematics Day every year to mark the birth anniversary of legendary mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. In 2012, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced December 22 as National Mathematics Day and the year (2012) had been celebrated as the National Mathematics Year.

Srinivasa Ramanujan:

Born: 22 December, 1887

  • Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in Tamil Nadu’s Erode to a Brahmin Iyengar family. He had developed a interest for mathematics at a very young age. He was mastering trigonometry at 12 and was eligible for a scholarship at the Government Arts College in Kumbakonam.
  • In 1912, Ramanujan began working as a clerk in the Madras Port Trust. There, his mathematical genius was acknowledged by some of his colleagues and one of them referred him to Professor GH Hardy of Trinity College, Cambridge University. He met Hardy in 1913, after which he went to Trinity College.
  • Ramanujan was elected to the prestigious Royal Society for his research on Elliptic Functions and theory of numbers. He became the first Indian to be elected a Fellow of the Trinity College.
  • Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematician and is regarded one of the greatest Indian mathematicians of all time.
  • During his short but impactful lifespan, Ramanujan solved theorems that seemed impossible to solve. He is remembered for the work he did in the areas of continued fractions, Riemann series, elliptic integrals, hyper-geometric series and functional equations of the zeta function.
  • On May 2, 1918, he became a fellow of the Royal Society in London and became the one of youngest people to receive such an honour. The death of Ramanujan happened at the very young age of 32 on April 26, 1920.

History of National Mathematics Day:

From 2012, India celebrated December 22 as National Mathematics Day and the year (2012) was celebrated as the National Mathematics Year.

Srinivasa Ramanujan was featured in the 2012 on India stamp. In 2017, the Ramanujan Math Park was commenced in Kuppam, in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh.

Theme and Importance of the day:

There is no theme for National Mathematics Day 2022. The celebration of the day does with the aim to make people aware of the importance of mathematics and advancements and developments made in the field.

Many schools and colleges in India organize competitions, Olympiads and other educational events to commemorate this day.
