On 12 January every year, India celebrates this day as National Youth Day to mark the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 25th National Youth Festival via virtual conference in Puducherry on 12th January.

Two essays have been chosen by PM Modi which has topics (a) Mere Sapno ka Bharat and (b) Unsung Heroes of Indian Freedom Movement.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed the affiliated schools to celebrate “National Youth Day” and the “Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda” on January 12 through online or offline mode. The board has also suggested schools to organize special assembly, debate or speeches and cultural programmes dedicated to Swami Vivekananda on the occasion.

History:

The Government of India declared 12 January as National Youth Day to mark the birth anniversary of the great philosopher and monk Swami Vivekananda in 1984. After that this day is celebrated as National Youth Day all over India since 1985.

About Swami Vivekananda:

Born: 12 January, 1863 in Kolkata

Died: 4 July, 1902

Narendranath Datta which is the childhood name of Swami Vivekananda was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was always leant towards spirituality. He practiced meditation from a very early age and also joined the Brahmo Samaj movement for a certain period.

In 1881 Narendra first met Ramakrishna Paramhans who became his spiritual focus. As he known as one of the greatest patriots, he introduced Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the western world. He was known as Swami Vivekananda later that.

World Religious Parliament in 1983:

The Parliament of the World’s Religions organized on 11 September 1893 at the Chicago, USA as part of the World’s Columbian Exposition. Swami Vivekananda gave a brief speech representing India and Hinduism. He began his speech with “Sisters and brothers of America!” and after these words of Vivekananda, he welcomed with a two-minute standing ovation from the crowd of more than 7000.
