Things to know about ISRO’s new chief Dr.S.Somanath

Eminent rocket scientist S Somanath has been appointed as the new chairperson of the Indian Space Research Organisation. Centre has released the notification which appointed Dr. S.Somanath for the post of the secretary of the Department of Space and chairman of the Space Commission.

Somanath will succeed K Sivan who holds the position of the chief of ISRO since 2018. The extended tenure of Dr. K.Sivan is going to be end on 14th Jaunary.

7 points about new chief of ISRO:

  1. Somanath has done his graduation with his B. Tech degree from TKM College of engineering, Kollam in Mechanical Engineering.
  2. He completed his Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering from Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. S.Somanath specialized in dynamics and control.
  3. S.Somanath started working with the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in 1985 and tied in with the (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) project in its early phase. He was working for the system integration design, sub-assembly realization and testing the stages of PSLV during its development. He was a team leader for the first and second developmental flights of PSLV.
  4. After that Somanath turned the project manager for Vehicle Engineering and Launch Services Management of PSLV Project.
  5. Somanath co-ordinates with the launches of mini satellites in PSLV-C2 and C3 missions in his capacity as the satellite launch service manager.
  6. He is currently the director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Kerala.
  7. Somanath has won awards and honours for his distinguished service. Some awards and honours are the Space Gold Medal from Astronautical Society of India and the Performance Excellence award from ISRO.

With Centre’s decision of his appointment as the new chief of ISRO, he will serve as chief of ISRO for tenure of three years from the date of joining of the post with inclusion of an extension in tenure beyond the age of superannuation in public interest.

ISRO in recent news:

  • Government of India announced that two unmanned missions would be launched before the flagship mission ‘Gaganyaan”.
  • ISRO signed agreements with 4 countries for satellite launches in December 2021 which would increase revenue of 132 million euro.
  • IN-SPACe directorates will be parted between Bengaluru and Ahmedabad.
  • ISRO is on the progress with the missions of Disha, Trishna and Venus.
