New Ramsar sites for India on World Wetlands Day

UNESCO has released ‘National Wetland Decadal Change Atlas’ and also announced two new Ramsar sites on the occasion of World Wetlands Day 2022.
Two new Ramsar sites:
1.) Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat and
2.) Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh
With these two new Ramsar sites now India has total 49 Ramsar Sites.
World Wetlands Day:
World Wetlands Day is observed on February 2. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on the same day in 1971 in the city of Ramsar (Iran).
The theme for 2022: ‘Wetlands Action for People and Nature’ – The importance of actions to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for humans and planetary health.
About Ramsar Sites:
A Ramsar site is a wetland site which is intended to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention also known as “The Convention on Wetlands”.
It is an intergovernmental environmental treaty set up in 1971 by UNESCO and came into force in 1975. It renders for national action and international cooperation regarding the conservation of wetlands, and wise sustainable use of their resources.
Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary is the safe wintering and staging ground for many special Central Asian Flyway. Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary is a coastal wetland with rich avifaunal diversity providing a safe habitat to endangered and vulnerable species.
The original Wetland Atlas was published in 2011. The decadal change atlas is made to highlight the changes in wetlands across the country.
National Event:
The main national-level event on the occasion of World Wetlands Day has been organized at the Sultanpur National Park which is a Ramsar Site of Haryana.
Bhupender Yadav Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal has launched the decadal change atlas at the event.
