Pandit Shivkumar Sharma a veteran santoor maestro has passed away due to cardiac arrest in Mumbai. He was 84 and suffering from renal ailments.
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma:
Born: 13 January 1938
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was born in Jammu & Kashmir in musical family. His father Uma Dutta Sharma was a famous vocalist and Tabla player. He started his musical journey from the age of 5 years and started learning Santoor at the early teen age.
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma had given an official recognition to the santoor as a popular Indian classical music instrument.
He worked along with celebrated flautist Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia and composed music for many Hindi films. His son and disciple Rahul, a santoor artiste, has been taking his father’s legacy forward.
Worked with masters:
Pandit Shivkumar Sharma worked with many well known personalities in music industry. He collaborated with Indian Tabla player Zakir Hussain and with flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia to elevate Indian music to different level.
Shiv-Hari, which was the collaborated name of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Hariprasad Chaurasia, composed music for many great Indian films and albums.
Fourth highest civilian award, Padma Shri in 1991
Second highest civilian award- Padma Vibhushan (in 2001)
Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1986

Work in famous films:
Faasle (1985), Chandni (1989), Lamhe (1991), and Darr (1993) are the very famous films in which he gave his musical mastery.
Pt. Shivkumar, set the multiple-string santoor at the centre stage. He authorized the instrument to play Hindustani music and became its foremost exponent.
Music industry along with Indian politicians, businessmen, industrialist, sports personalities and renowned persons expressed sorrow on the death of legendary Santoor player Pt. Shivkumar Sharma.
The passing away of Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharmaji signs the end of an era. He was the pioneer of santoor and his contribution is unparalleled.
