The Darkest day in Indian History : Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre which is also known as the Massacre of Amritsar was happened on April 13, 1919. This day is considered as the darkest day in Indian history as so many people had lost their lives in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.

Many Indian people were gathered at an open space called the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, in the Punjab region (now in Punjab state). Suddenly, British troops fired without any warning or intimation on the crowd.

Several hundred people were died on the spot and hundreds more were wounded.

This incident is considered to be a remarkable in India’s modern history and it resulted to Gandhi’s full commitment to the cause of Indian nationalism and independence from Britain.

Jallianwala Bagh Massacre:

  • British police held the two nationalist leaders, Satya Pal and Dr Saifuddin Kitchlew in jail. Indian people were gathered at Jallianwala Bagh (Amritsar) to protest against the arrest of them on 13 April 1919.
  • General Dyer a British military officer had entered the park with his troops suddenly and ordered troops to fire without even giving a warning to the people to disperse. After 10 minutes of continues firing their ammunition was exhausted and they left.
  • According to the estimates of the congress around a thousand persons were killed and about 2000 wounded.
  • Even the bullet marks are still there on the walls of the Jallianwala Bagh.
  • After Independence Government of India declared the Jallianwala Bagh a national memorial.

Indian revolutionary Udham Singh:

On 13 March 1940 after 21 years of the incident, an Indian revolutionary Udham Singh killed Michael O’Dwyer.

Udham Singh shot down the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab at the time of the Jalliawala Bagh massacre Michael O’Dwyer.

Indian poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter Rabindranath Tagore returned back his Knighthood which he received from British government.
