India Says Trade Agreement With U.S. Is Near Finalization

  • India is likely to announce a small trade deal with the United States in the next few days. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has decided to delay new tariffs (extra import taxes) until August 1.
  • Indian government officials have made it clear that the deal will only go through if it protects India’s interests and supports its local industries.
  • Earlier on Tuesday, President Trump said the U.S. is “close to making a deal with India,” showing that talks between the two countries are moving forward.
  • President Trump has sent warning letters to 14 countries, saying the U.S. will start charging extra import taxes (tariffs) from August 1. This move is part of his plan to fix America’s trade problems with other countries by making the rules stricter.
  • The countries that got these warning letters are Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Tunisia, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Serbia, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar.
  • An Indian official told The Hindu that India hasn’t received such a letter. Discussions between India and the U.S. are still happening. For now, India is trying to wrap up the trade deal before the earlier deadline of July 8–9.
  • A recent order signed by President Trump says the new tariffs are on hold until 12:01 a.m. on August 1, based on advice from top U.S. officials.
  • An Indian official involved in the talks said the deal might be completed by July 8 or shortly after that, but only if both sides agree on all the details.
  • However, if India feels the deal isn’t fair, it may use the extra time (until August 1) to push for changes that better suit its needs.
  • President Trump said again on Tuesday that the new tariffs would begin on August 1 and made it clear that no further delays will be allowed beyond that date.
  • On Truth Social, Mr. Trump wrote, “No extensions will be granted,” stressing that this is the final deadline, no matter what.
  • On Monday, Mr. Trump also said that the U.S. had reached trade agreements with a few countries, but in most cases, they sent out warning letters instead.
  • India’s trade team, led by senior official Rajesh Agrawal from the Commerce Ministry, just got back from their second visit to the U.S., where they held serious talks.
  • Similarly, U.S. officials have also visited India twice in the past few months to try and sort out issues that are stopping the mini trade deal from being finalized.
  • According to sources, India has now put forward its final offer and is waiting to hear whether the U.S. will agree to it.
  • Indian officials have made it clear they won’t make any more changes to their offer, showing that they are standing firm on their position.
  • The main areas where the two countries disagree are about genetically modified (GM) crops and dairy products, which have stopped a final deal from being signed many times.
  • The United States is asking India to let in certain genetically modified (GM) items, like soybean meal and DDGS — which is an animal feed made during the production of ethanol. But right now, India does not allow these products to be brought into the country.
  • India is very careful when it comes to GM crops, even its own. It is even more careful when it comes to allowing such foreign products into the country.
  • Another demand from the U.S. is to let American cow milk products enter the Indian market. But India keeps saying no, as it is worried about the safety and quality of such milk.

Three Schoolchildren Die as Train Collides with Van at Level Crossing in Tamil Nadu

  • Three schoolchildren died after their school van was hit by a train while trying to cross a railway gate in Semmankuppam, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday morning.
  • Another student, the van driver, and a man from the local area were also badly injured in the accident, which happened around 7:45 a.m. as the van was on its way to school.
  • The Villupuram–Mayiladuthurai passenger train was moving at 95 km per hour when it hit the van and dragged it for nearly 50 metres before stopping, according to reports from the site.
  • Early investigations by railway officers suggest that the van driver tried to cross the gate even though it was unsafe and should not have done so.
  • Eyewitnesses say the railway gatekeeper, Pankaj Sharma, didn’t close the gate in time for the coming train. The local people were so angry that they beat him up right after the accident.
  • The students who died were 12-year-old Nimalesh and 16-year-old T. Charumathy, who died on the spot. Charumathy’s 15-year-old brother, T. Chezhiyan, died later at a hospital in Puducherry.
  • Another student, 16-year-old Viswesh, and the 47-year-old van driver, S. Sankar, were seriously hurt and are now in Cuddalore Government Hospital.
  • Annadurai, a 55-year-old man from Semmankuppam, was hurt while trying to rescue children trapped in the school van after the train crash. While helping, a live electric wire that had snapped fell on him, causing injuries.
  • Southern Railway said the van belonged to Krishnaswamy Vidyanikethan, a private CBSE school in S. Kumarapuram, and it was crossing manned gate number 170, which didn’t have proper signals.
  • Police officers, including Superintendent S. Jeyakumar and Deputy Inspector-General E.S. Uma from the Villupuram range, came to the accident spot and managed the rescue and investigation.

Shivamogga Woman Dies During Ritual to ‘Ward Off Evil’; Three Arrested

  • Geetha, a 55-year-old woman from Jambargatta village, sadly lost her life after being beaten during a ritual that was supposed to chase away evil spirits. The incident happened near a temple in her village and has left the entire community in shock.
  • Geetha collapsed on Sunday night after the ritual, which took place near the Chowdeshwari temple in her village. The woman who performed the ritual, Asha, claimed she had divine powers.
  • Geetha was taken to the government health centre in Holehonnur, but doctors said she was already dead when brought in at 5:30 a.m. on Monday. Her family is devastated.
  • The police arrested three people: Asha (who led the ritual), her husband Santhosh (who helped), and Geetha’s own son Sanjay (who brought her to the ritual).
  • Villagers are blaming Asha, who is 45 years old. They say she has been claiming to have spiritual powers for a long time. People in the village are angry and upset about what happened.
  • Geetha’s daughter, Shalini, said with heartbreak, “Let her come now and wake my mother up,” calling out Asha’s false powers in her moment of grief.
  • Geetha, a widow and mother of three, worked in the fields to support her children because the crops from their own land were not enough after her husband died more than 10 years ago.
  • Asha had reportedly recorded the entire ritual on video, planning to use it to show off her so-called spiritual powers. But now, those upsetting videos have spread across Shivamogga, causing public anger.
  • The video clearly shows Asha beating Geetha with a cane during the ritual, which matches what the villagers said and has led to more people demanding justice.
  • Local resident Jyothi said that the village elders had warned people before not to trust Asha or let her perform such rituals, as many didn’t believe her claims of having spiritual or healing powers.
