Trump Ends Iran Ceasefire, Talks Continue

  • S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran was over, although he said that talks could still continue if both sides wanted. Speaking at a NATO summit in Ankara, he said, “As far as I am concerned, it is over.”
  • Trump called the negotiations with Iran a “waste of time” and said he personally did not think there was any benefit in continuing them. He said U.S. negotiators could keep talking if they wanted, but added, “I do not like these people.”
  • Trump also announced that the United States would carry out fresh military strikes against Iran on Wednesday night. He said, “We’re gonna hit ’em hard tonight,” and accused Iran of breaking the agreement every day.
  • Iran replied by saying that repeated “violations” by the United States had made some parts of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) ineffective.
  • Iran said it had attacked 85 U.S. military assets in the Persian Gulf as a response to U.S. air strikes on several monitoring and surveillance centres along Iran’s southern coast.
  • According to Iranian state television, the U.S. air strikes killed eight military personnel. Quoting a statement from the military, Iranian state television said that after what it called the “criminal aggression” by the “U.S. terrorist army” in southern Iran, eight members of the air and naval forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s military stationed in Bandar Abbas and Bushehr were martyred.
  • This was the second exchange of attacks between the United States and Iran since they signed the MoU on June 17. Under the agreement, both countries had decided to extend the ceasefire and begin negotiations for a final settlement.
  • The main reason for the fresh rise in tensions is the dispute over control of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • The MoU says that oil tankers should be able to pass safely through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Iran has opened a shipping route along its own coastline and told ships to use a “designated route” along the Iranian coast in coordination with local authorities.
  • Over the weekend, three ships travelling through another route along the Omani coast were attacked. These ships were the Marshall Islands-flagged M/T Al Rekayyat, the Saudi Arabia-flagged M/T Wedyan, and the Liberian-flagged M/T Cyprus Prosperity.
  • After the attacks on the three oil tankers, the United States cancelled the sanctions waiver that it had given after the MoU was signed. This waiver had allowed Iran to continue selling its oil.
  • The U.S. launched the new air strikes after cancelling the sanctions waiver.
  • In a statement, U.S. Central Command said that on July 7, its forces carried out a fresh round of offensive strikes against Iran, hitting more than 80 targets with precision weapons as an immediate response to Iran’s latest attacks on commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • S. Central Command also said that American forces targeted Iranian air defence systems, command-and-control networks, coastal radar sites, anti-ship missile systems, and more than 60 small boats belonging to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
  • According to the U.S. military, these strikes were meant to reduce Iran’s ability to continue attacking international commercial ships using this important trade route.
  • India expressed deep concern on Wednesday over the renewed attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs urged all sides to show restraint.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs also appealed to all parties to return to dialogue and diplomacy so that a peaceful and long-lasting solution to the conflict could be reached.

U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) Says Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar Ordered Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s Killing in Canada

  • The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) said on Wednesday that jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his associate Satinderjeet Singh, also known as Goldy Brar, ordered the killing of pro-Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. According to the DoJ, Nijjar was shot dead on June 18, 2023, outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.
  • The killing caused a major diplomatic dispute between India and Canada. At that time, the Canadian government led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed that “agents of the Indian government” were involved in the murder. Canada also named some Indian diplomats as “persons of interest” during its investigation.
  • The investigation was carried out under Operation Hard Ball by law enforcement agencies from the United States, Canada, and Europe. The DoJ said this operation was the result of a federal investigation that had been going on for several years.
  • The DoJ has charged 37 people in the case, including a serving Punjab Police inspector.
  • India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Union Home Ministry have not released any statement on the matter. However, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said during a press conference that Indian authorities had fully cooperated with the investigation and that “India is happy with today’s operations.”
  • The DoJ also said that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is running its own separate investigation into South Asian organised crime.
  • In the U.S. court documents, Nijjar was identified only as “H.S.N.” The DoJ described him as a “prominent Indian political and religious figure,” while India had officially declared Nijjar a terrorist in 2020.
  • The FBI has announced a reward of $50,000 for information that helps in the arrest and extradition of Goldy Brar.
  • Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently lodged in Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad, has been charged with racketeering, targeted killings, shootings, extortion, drug trafficking across international borders, and several other criminal activities. The DoJ said these crimes have affected many people, especially members of the Indian diaspora living abroad.
  • The DoJ said that 24 accused linked to three India-based transnational organised crime groups have already been arrested in the United States, Canada, and Spain.
  • Law enforcement agencies are still searching for 10 fugitives. Out of them, seven are believed to be in the United States, two in India, and one in Europe.
  • Bill Essayli said these criminal groups have been a serious problem not only for the United States but also for India. He said that although some of the accused are already in jail in India, they have continued to run criminal activities from prison. He added that if they are extradited to the United States, they will remain in custody for a long time and will no longer be able to threaten or extort people.
  • The Punjab Police officer charged in the case has been identified as Gurinderjit Singh.
  • Bill Essayli said that Gurinderjit Singh has not been arrested yet, but he is expected to be taken into custody soon. He added that Gurinderjit Singh has already been formally charged and will be extradited to the United States.
  • After these developments, the Punjab Police transferred Gurinderjit Singh to Police Lines and ordered an inquiry against him.
  • As part of the investigation, law enforcement agencies seized around 1,000 kilograms of cocaine, one kilogram of heroin, $40,000 in cash, and 12 firearms.
  • Investigators also carried out 23 search operations in the Sacramento area and another 11 search operations in the Los Angeles area.
