Three killed after debris slips at tunnel site in Wayanad
- At least three people died and five others are still missing after a huge pile of dug-up mud suddenly collapsed at the entrance of an under-construction tunnel road in Wayanad district, Kerala, on Tuesday. Rescue teams have so far saved 10 people from the accident site.
- The people who lost their lives were identified as Chandra Bahn from Madhya Pradesh, Bikash Kumar from Bihar, and Anmol from Jharkhand. All three were working at the tunnel construction site.
- CCTV footage showed the exact moment when a massive wave of mud rushed down at around 11 a.m., burying construction workers, people passing by, parked earthmoving machines, and a large multi-axle tanker lorry.
- Officials said that 18 people were caught in the accident. Out of them, 10 injured people were taken to WIMS Hospital in Meppadi, and five of them were discharged after receiving treatment.
- Local people said they first heard a very loud crashing sound and then saw a fast-moving wave of mud and debris that swept away everything in its path. The accident happened near the Meenakshi Bridge entrance of the underground tunnel road project.
- Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan and Agriculture Minister T. Siddique said that continuous heavy rainfall made the huge pile of excavated mud unstable, causing it to collapse with a loud noise.
- They called the incident a disaster caused by human mistakes, failure to follow safety rules, and serious negligence. They also said that repeated warnings from the government had been ignored.
- Rescue work is being carried out by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Fire and Rescue Department, Kerala Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers.
- Rescue teams checked workers’ duty records to identify everyone who was present at the site and to find out who might still be trapped under the mud.
- Siddique, who is also the Minister in charge of Wayanad and the MLA from Kalpetta, said the district administration had warned the private construction company many times that such an accident could happen.
- He said the private company had received the contract from Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) to build the twin-tube tunnels connecting Kozhikode and Wayanad districts.
- Siddique and his Cabinet colleague A.P. Anil Kumar visited the accident site and later held a review meeting at WIMS Hospital.
- Siddique said the number of deaths could have been much higher if part of the construction work had not already been stopped because of the heavy rainfall.
- He also said that the collapsed pile was made up of mud and rocks that had been dug out and blasted during the construction of the approach roads and bridges leading to the tunnel.
- Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan announced that a multi-agency investigation will be carried out to find out who is responsible for the accident.
- He said the district administration had already given an ultimatum to the builders on June 20, asking them to remove the large pile of excavated mud from the area.
- Satheesan also said that Public Works Department (PWD) Minister P.K. Basheer had earlier held a meeting with all concerned officials and had specifically warned them that the piled-up mud had become dangerous.
- As a safety measure, the government shifted nearby residents to safer places, stopped traffic on the Meenakshi Bridge, and asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to check whether the bridge was still safe to use.
- Wayanad MP and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that rescue teams were continuing their efforts to save the people who are still trapped under the debris.
- Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, Pinarayi Vijayan, demanded a detailed investigation to find out whether there were any mistakes or criminal negligence behind the tragedy. He also expressed his support for the rescue teams, the people of Wayanad, and the State government during this difficult time.

- The joint statement also referred to the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 17 June 2026 and welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran to end the war in West Asia.
- The statement further said that the movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz should continue according to international law, including the rules of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
- It also said that President Prabowo welcomed India’s interest in working together for the integrated development of Sabang Port.
- The proposed cooperation on Sabang Port will include the development of maritime industries and shore-based services to support offshore energy activities in the Andaman Sea.

Ram Temple SIT Report Says Staff Stole Cash, Security Protocols Were Ignored
- The Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate the alleged money scam in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple Trust, found initial evidence that cash was stolen while donation money was being counted.
- According to the SIT report, which was submitted on June 23, the team checked CCTV footage recorded between April 27 and June 5. The footage allegedly showed some cash-counting staff hiding bundles of cash inside their clothes, pockets, shoes, and other places.
- The CCTV footage also showed that some other employees appeared to help, support, or cover up these thefts.
- The SIT identified around 70 suspected incidents of theft from the CCTV footage that was available.
- The report also said that, based on the statements of employees and the difference between the amount of cash counted and the amount deposited in banks, similar thefts may have happened even before April 27. However, since CCTV footage from that earlier period was not available, the SIT could not find out how much money may have been stolen.
- During the investigation, the SIT recorded statements from Trust officials, bank staff, security personnel, and employees involved in counting donations. It also checked bank records, seizure documents, and the Trust’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- The SIT found that many important security rules, such as frisking staff, using biometric attendance, stopping staff from carrying personal belongings, proper CCTV monitoring, and other security checks, were either not followed properly or were not enforced at all.
- The report said these security failures created an environment where theft and cash pilferage could take place.
- Apart from the alleged cash theft, the SIT also found problems in the way valuable donations were handled. It pointed to irregularities in maintaining records, weighing donated items, and sealing them properly.
- Based on CCTV footage, recovered material, financial records, and witness statements, the SIT found prima facie involvement of Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Lavkush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, and Ramashankar Mishra.
- The report specifically said that Avinash Shukla and Manish Kumar Yadav were seen several times removing or hiding cash, while the other accused were allegedly seen helping them or taking part in similar activities.
- Following its initial findings of large-scale irregularities, the SIT is likely to carry out a fresh audit of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust’s accounts for the last five years.
- The proposed re-audit is expected to examine construction expenses as well as jewellery, gold, silver, and other valuable items donated to the Trust.
- The SIT will also carry out a detailed examination of the Trust’s complete financial records for the same five-year period.
- In connection with the case, eight people have been arrested. These include the six people named in the report, along with Ram Shankar Yadav and Subhash Srivastava.
- All eight accused have been in 14-day judicial custody since June 29, and the next hearing in the case is scheduled for July 13.
- A court in Ayodhya has also granted one-day police custody of Karunesh Pandey, Lavkush Mishra, and Anukalp Mishra.
- Former Uttar Pradesh Police Director General-rank officer Vibhuti Narain Rai described the available CCTV evidence as only the “tip of the iceberg.”
- Rai said that if CCTV footage covering only April 27 to June 5 showed so many suspected thefts, it suggests that there may have been a much bigger and organised corruption network.
- He also said that during the Maha Kumbh, when many more devotees visited the temple and donations were much higher, a much larger amount of money may have been misappropriated by an organised group.
