Talks with Iran to Continue, Says Jaishankar
- The Indian government tried to contact the Iranian leadership after the February 28 attack by the United States and Israel in which Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed. However, it could not establish contact because the conflict in the region was still continuing. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar informed Parliament about this while making a suo motu statement on Monday.
- He said that earlier Iran had asked for permission for three ships present in the region to dock at Indian ports. This request was made before the United States torpedoed the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Dena near Sri Lanka.
- While speaking in Parliament after the Budget Session resumed, Jaishankar again said that the government’s top priority is to ensure the safety of Indians living in that region.
- He also said that energy security and trade routes are extremely important for India. He informed Members of Parliament about the diplomatic talks India had with the United States during this difficult period.
- Jaishankar explained that although attempts were made to contact Iran’s leadership, it was difficult because of the situation created by the conflict.
- However, he confirmed that he had spoken with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on February 28 and again on March 5.
- He also said that India will continue these high-level talks with Iran in the coming days.
- So far, India has not officially condemned the incident. However, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri signed the condolence book at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi on March 5 when Iran was mourning the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
- Khamenei was killed along with several senior officials and members of his close family.
- Jaishankar also told Members of Parliament about the diplomatic conversations that India had with the United States during this period.
- He assured Parliament that Indian missions in the region were working very hard to help Indian tourists who were stranded because of the conflict.
- He said that commercial flights were operated whenever there was even a small opening of airspace.
- According to government estimates, about 67,000 Indian citizens have been brought back to India through these efforts.
- The Ministry of Civil Aviation said that in the last three days many flights arrived in India. On March 7, Indian airlines operated 51 inbound flights.
- On March 8, a total of 49 inbound flights arrived in India.
- On March 9, around 50 flights were planned to arrive.
- Jaishankar also informed Parliament that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had thanked India after the Iranian naval ship IRIS Lavan was allowed to dock at Kochi.
- He explained that Iran had asked India on February 28 for permission for three ships in the region to dock at Indian ports.
- India gave this permission on March 1 for docking at Kochi.
- The ship IRIS Lavan finally docked in Kochi on March 4.
- Jaishankar said that the crew members of the ship are currently staying at Indian naval facilities.
- He described the decision to allow the ship to dock as “the right thing to do”.
- The minister also informed Members of Parliament about conversations held by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and himself with leaders of several Gulf countries.
- During these conversations, India received assurances that the safety and well-being of the Indian community living in those countries would be treated as a priority.
- Jaishankar also mentioned the risk to energy security caused by attacks on energy facilities in the region and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
- He said that the Indian government is fully committed to protecting the country’s energy security.
- He also said that the interests of Indian consumers have always been, and will continue to be, the government’s top priority.
- He added that whenever required, Indian diplomacy has supported the efforts of India’s energy companies during this unstable situation.
- The Congress party criticised Mr. Jaishankar’s statement. According to the party, the statement strangely did not protest against the sinking of the Iranian naval ship IRIS Dena near India’s strategic area.
- The party said that such a situation weakens India’s role as a security provider in the Indian Ocean region.
- The Congress also said that the statement did not condemn the killing of the head of a sovereign nation.
- The party further argued that the government’s statement did not provide solutions to deal with the serious economic and political problems that India might face because of the crisis or the possible escalation of tensions in the future.
West Asia crisis dominates Lok Sabha proceedings; resolution on removal of Speaker not taken up
- When the Budget Session resumed on Monday, the Lok Sabha could not take up the resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla. This happened because the House was repeatedly adjourned. The Opposition demanded a full discussion on the West Asia crisis and its impact on nearly 10 million Indians living in that region.
- Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the Opposition and called them irresponsible. The Chair also accused them of holding the functioning of the House “hostage” to their demands.
- The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the entire day soon after it reassembled at 3 p.m., after it had already been adjourned twice earlier.
- Kiren Rijiju said in the House that he had never seen such an irresponsible Opposition party in his life. He also said that the Opposition does not understand the basic ethics and rules of the House or the values of the Constitution.
- Despite these accusations, the Opposition continued demanding a detailed discussion on the West Asia crisis and energy security because of the ongoing war in the region.
- The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, indicated on Monday evening that the Opposition would take a stronger stand on the issue.
- Rahul Gandhi said that the conflict in West Asia is an attempt to create a major global shift. He warned that India’s economy could suffer heavy losses. He also mentioned recent developments in the stock market and claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had signed a trade agreement with the United States that could have a large economic impact on the country.
- Sources said that the government is unlikely to accept the Opposition’s demand for a discussion because External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had already made a suo motu statement about the West Asia issue in both Houses of Parliament.
- Opposition parties belonging to the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance are expected to meet on Tuesday morning to decide their next step.
- The government wants to first hold a debate on the resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Kiren Rijiju are expected to speak during this debate.
- The Congress party plans to send senior leaders such as Gaurav Gogoi and Manish Tewari to participate in the discussion.
- Rahul Gandhi questioned why the government was unwilling to discuss the West Asia crisis before taking up the resolution for removing the Speaker.
- He asked whether the situation in West Asia was not important and whether rising fuel prices and possible economic damage were not serious issues for the people of India.
- Rahul Gandhi said these matters affect the public and therefore deserve discussion. However, he alleged that the government is avoiding the debate because other questions might arise regarding the Prime Minister’s position and possible pressure on him.
- As soon as the Lok Sabha proceedings began, the House faced repeated adjournments because Opposition Members of Parliament started raising slogans.
- Jagadambika Pal, who was presiding over the proceedings, accused the Opposition of wasting taxpayers’ money by disrupting the House.
- Jagadambika Pal said that about ₹9 crore per day is spent to run the Lok Sabha. He alleged that the Opposition was holding the functioning of the House “hostage”.
- He called the behaviour of the Opposition immature and irresponsible.
- He further claimed that the Opposition was deliberately trying to disrupt the proceedings with a political agenda so that the House could not take up the resolution against Om Birla.
- The demand to first discuss the West Asia crisis was also raised during a meeting of senior leaders of the INDIA bloc on Monday morning. The meeting took place in the office of Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge in Parliament.
- Before the parliamentary proceedings started, Members of Parliament from the INDIA bloc also held a protest outside the Parliament building.
IndiGo flight to the U.K. returns to Delhi after 14 hours in the air due to permit issue raised by Eritrea
- An IndiGo flight travelling from Delhi to Manchester had to return to Delhi after staying in the air for almost eight hours. The aircraft had avoided flying over the conflict-affected Persian Gulf region, but the entire journey finally lasted around 14 hours before it landed back at the same airport from where it had taken off.
- According to sources, the long diversion happened because air traffic control authorities in Eritrea became confused about a permit that had been filed by IndiGo.
- The aircraft used for the flight was a Boeing 787-9, which IndiGo had leased from the Norwegian airline Norse Atlantic Airways.
- The plane departed from Delhi at 12:30 a.m. on Monday.
- Data from the flight-tracking website Flightradar24 shows that the aircraft avoided the entire Gulf region and entered Africa through Ethiopia. While flying over Eritrea, the aircraft suddenly made a U-turn and began flying back to Delhi.
- The plane finally landed back in Delhi at 2:30 p.m.
- IndiGo had only partly restarted its flights to Europe on Sunday after suspending them for more than a week. The Manchester flight was the first service on this route since February 26.
- To avoid risky airspace, the airline is currently flying through a longer route over Africa.
- The diversion on Monday happened because of confusion related to the operational arrangement of the leased aircraft.
- Normally, overflight permits are obtained by the airline that sells the tickets. In this case, that airline was IndiGo. However, the permit must also include the airline under whose name the aircraft is officially registered, which in this case was Norse Atlantic Airways.
- Although the permit had correctly mentioned this arrangement, air traffic authorities in Eritrea reportedly became confused because two different airlines were connected with the same aircraft. This confusion resulted in the aircraft being diverted.
- In an official statement, IndiGo said that it was working with the relevant authorities to find a way to continue the journey.
- Another IndiGo flight travelling between London and Mumbai on Sunday had also been diverted to Cairo because of the same issue.
- The Manchester flight is now scheduled to depart again on Tuesday. The airline said that hotel accommodation is being arranged for passengers who were affected by the disruption.
- Two other IndiGo flights flying to Amsterdam and London through the same route were completed without any problems.
- Until recently, all of IndiGo’s European flights had been suspended because the leased Boeing 787 aircraft fall under the authority of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
- On February 28, the agency issued an advisory that prevented its carriers from flying over 11 countries in West Asia after airstrikes between the United States–Israel and Iran.
