Dispute in Shivsena.

  • The Election Commission of India issued an order on Monday and allotted ‘Balasahebanchi shiv sena’ as the party name for the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shivsena.
  • The ECI also asked the party to provide a fresh list of three symbols by Tuesday.
  • Maharashtra Chief minister Eknath Shinde also claimed the name and the ‘bow-arrow’ symbol.
  • The ECI has frozen the name and symbol of the party as it had done earlier in cases of splits in the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Lok Janshakti Party; the commission had kept the name suspended until the final decision on the contesting claims.
  • In some cases symbols also provide the political meaning as in the case of Samajwadi party’s symbol ‘bicycle’ and Rashtriya Janata Dal’s lantern.
  • In this case also Shivsena felt its symbol bow and arrow went well with its constant need to appear combative and strident.
  • That symbol has now become the central dispute between the two factions.
  • The legal battle for the symbol and the name will continue though the ECI has frozen it.
  • Both the groups are claiming the symbol and now ECI has a tough task in determining which side gets to own the sena brand.
  • Shinde is an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party that is in power in the centre.
  • Though it is a legal battle of the name and the symbol,it will be solved by politics only.
  • Whichever faction will be seen as the more real shiv sena by the public will win the battle.
  • Both the groups are trying to get the public support as it had already seen in the dussehra rally ,had two iterations this year- one addressed by Uddhav Thackeray at the Shivaji park and the other addressed by Mr.Shinde at 6 km away.
  • The first electoral test for the factions will be conducted on 3 November .
  • The Thackeray faction will be facing off with a BJP candidate who is backed by the Shinde faction.
  • Thackeray has the name of his father and sena founder but his style is very dissimilar from his father.
  • It is unlikely that both factions will survive over the long term; the symbol might not have enough to decide the winner.
