Repairs on Tungabhadra, water rerouted to canals
The Deputy Chief Minister stated that authorities are working to conserve approximately 60 TMCFT of water to ensure that farmers receive enough water to support at least one crop this year. Karnataka is also planning to establish a dam safety committee.
- After a crest gate of the Tungabhadra Dam was washed away on Saturday, the Karnataka government has decided to form a dam safety committee to evaluate the safety of all the reservoirs in the State.
- Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who is also in charge of the Major Irrigation portfolio, stated that the proposed committee would submit its report within a month.
- Shivakumar, who visited the Tungabhadra dam site, stated that in the early hours of Monday, repairs began. He explained the involved procedures, noting that the Tungabhadra Irrigation Board includes representatives from the three riparian states and the Central government. As soon as the incident involving the snapping of the chain link of the gates was discovered, all board members were immediately informed. The matter was also discussed with dam safety experts.
- According to their recommendation, a pertinent map of the dam was acquired to assist the crest gate manufacturers in understanding the necessary specifications. “I have contacted the Jindal factory responsible for making the gates, and they began the repair work on Monday,” he stated.
- He noted that while it was necessary to reduce the storage to carry out the repairs, the authorities were making efforts to save 50 to 60 TMCFT of water to ensure that farmers could receive enough water to support at least one crop for the year.
- To reassure the farmers, he mentioned that instead of discharging all the water into the river, steps were being taken to divert it to canals and tanks. He mentioned that the Union Minister of State for Water Resources, V. Somanna, had also been informed about the details.
- He declined to hold the officials responsible for the chain link snapping, noting that the facility was nearly 70 years old and therefore could not endure the water pressure.
Seven people have died in a stampede at a temple in Jehanabad, Bihar
Residents are criticizing the administration for failing to take precautionary measures to manage the large crowd at the temple. An official, however, attributed the stampede to a confrontation between a flower seller and some devotees.
- On Monday, a stampede at the Baba Siddheshwarnath temple, situated on a hillock in Jehanabad district of central Bihar, resulted in the deaths of seven devotees, including three women, and left 16 others injured.
- Of the 16 injured individuals, 10 were released from a government hospital after receiving initial medical care, while three are still undergoing treatment there. The remaining three have been transferred to Anugrah Narayan Medical College and Hospital in Gaya.
- Local residents warned that the death toll might rise further. They criticized the administration for failing to implement precautionary measures to manage the large crowd that had assembled at the temple.
- According to witnesses who spoke to the press, some volunteers and police officers stationed at the temple reportedly used batons to manage the crowd, which contributed to the stampede.
- Jehanabad District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey stated, “The stampede was triggered by a confrontation between a flower seller and some devotees. The flower seller has gone missing following the incident. There was no baton charge by the crowd management personnel at the temple.”
- There was a large influx of devotees on the fourth Monday of the holy month of Shravan. “After midnight on August 11, devotees hurried to the temple on the hill to offer puja to Lord Shiva, which led to a stampede,” said Hareram Sharma, 36, a resident of Jehanabad town. He added that although he had also gone to offer prayers, he escaped unharmed due to “Baba’s (Lord Shiva’s) blessings.”
- Sharma stated, “The temple experienced complete mismanagement, with no effective crowd control system in place apart from the deployment of a few policemen and volunteers.”
- Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, expressing sorrow over the incident, instructed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured and announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh to each family of the deceased individuals.
- In the seventh century during the Gupta period, the Baba Siddheshwarnath temple, also known as “Magadh’s Baidyanath Dham,” was constructed. This name alludes to the famous Shiva temple at Deoghar in Jharkhand, which is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas.
- According to legends, the temple was built by King Bana, the father-in-law of King Jarasandha of ancient Rajgriha (Rajgir), situated approximately 30 km from Jehanabad.
Mamata gives police a seven-day deadline to solve the doctor’s murder case
The Chief Minister, after visiting the victim’s family, stated that the case would be handed over to the CBI if there is no progress by the deadline. Despite her offer, students continue to protest, while political parties criticize the State government and demand strict action to ensure justice.
- As protests continued to intensify over the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday issued a seven-day ultimatum to the police to make progress in the case, warning that if they failed, she would transfer the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
- “I want the culprits to be arrested by the police as quickly as possible. If they can’t solve the case by Sunday, I’ll transfer the investigation to the CBI… because there may be involvement from insiders,” Ms. Banerjee said.
- After meeting the victim’s family, the Chief Minister announced that the victim, who was discovered dead in a seminar room at the State-run hospital on Friday, had been found.
- Banerjee stated that even the family members suggested the possibility of an outsider being involved. “I am shocked by how this incident happened—nurses were present, and security personnel were there,” she added.
- The Chief Minister stated that everyone in positions of responsibility, including the principal, the medical superintendent of the hospital, and the police officer in charge of security, has been removed from their respective roles.
- Earlier in the day, Sandip Ghosh, the Principal of the medical college and hospital, resigned from his position.
- On Saturday, in connection with the crime, a civic police volunteer was arrested by the Kolkata Police. The accused was reportedly spotted in CCTV footage near the crime scene, and the post-mortem examination revealed signs of sexual assault.
- The junior doctors protesting against the crime refused the Chief Minister’s offer and declared that they would continue their demonstrations. The strike has been backed by the Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association of India (FORDA). To investigate the incident, a two-member team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) arrived in Kolkata and visited the State police headquarters.
- Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the incident as heartbreaking, emphasizing that women’s safety at the workplace is a major issue in the country and requires concrete efforts. She urged the State government to take immediate and strict action to ensure justice for the victim’s family and colleagues.
- BJP leader Amit Malviya claimed that the extended deadline indicated a need for more time to obscure the situation, protect influential individuals and their associates involved in the rape and murder, and intimidate the victim’s family.
- Malviya suggested that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would eventually transfer the compromised case to the CBI, only to later blame them for any shortcomings.
- He accused her of trying to cover up her own administrative failures through these actions.
