• The World Health Organization has noted that the e- cigarettes are not showing any strong effect to help quitting tobacco among populations.
• According to WHO e -cigarettes are shown to have adverse effects on population health and this is an alarming situation.
• WHO showed an urgent need to control the production and use of e-cigarettes in the market to protect children and non-smokers so that the harm on population health can be minimized.
• Among people,children are the most vulnerable and the chances are higher that they can be trapped to use e-cigarettes at an early age and further they may be hooked to nicotine.
• WHO advised countries to implement strong actions to prohibit e- cigarettes to protect their citizens.
• According to the WHO these e cigarettes are open in the market and can be easily accessible for young people.
• There are around 34 countries which have banned the sale of e- cigarettes.
• There are 88 countries where no age criteria has been set up to use e-cigarettes and in 74 countries no proper and strict regulations on e-cigarettes can be seen.
• If we talk about the situation of e-cigarettes in India, the use of e-cigarettes and other similar devices is prohibited under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarette Act (PECA) 2019, according to the Union Health Ministry.
• According to the data provided by WHO, 13 to 15 year old children are using e-cigarettes on a higher side than adults around the world and the number of e-cigarettes users among 16 to 19 years old has been doubled from 2017 to 2022.
• This is more shocking that the number of e-cigarettes users in the UK has tripled in the past three years.
• The World Health Organization has also stated that these e-cigarettes are highly addictive and dangerous to our health.
• These e-cigarettes can generate toxic substances which can be the reason for cancer and further the use of e-cigarettes can increase the risk of heart and lung diseases.
• The use of e-cigarettes also affects brain development and leads to various mental disorders in young people.
• It also adversely affects pregnant ladies and the exposure of these e-cigarettes also increases the risk of bystanders.
