Nitish Steps Down; BJP’s Samrat Set to Take Over as Bihar Chief Minister

  • Samrat Choudhary, who is currently the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, is now set to become the State’s first Chief Minister from the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) after being chosen as the leader of the BJP and NDA legislative parties on Tuesday.
He met Governor Syed Ata Hasnain to officially claim that he will form the new government in the State.
  • He is expected to take oath at the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday, along with a few selected leaders, including two Deputy Chief Ministers from the Janata Dal (United).
  • Choudhary’s selection came after several days of uncertainty and speculation.
  • This decision was made about an hour after Nitish Kumar resigned from his post, ending his long tenure as Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister.
  • Kumar, who leads the JD(U), had become a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament last week.
  • After being unanimously chosen as the leader of the BJP legislature party in a meeting held in Patna, Mr. Samrat Choudhary expressed his “heartfelt gratitude” to the BJP leadership for trusting him with this responsibility.

14 Workers Die in Explosion at Chhattisgarh Power Plant

  • At least 14 workers lost their lives and 20 others were injured after a boiler explosion at a power plant in Sakti district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.
  • According to Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafull Thakur, the explosion happened at around 2 p.m. at the Vedanta Ltd. power plant in Singhitarai village.
  • He confirmed that 14 workers died and at least 20 were injured, and said that police and district officials quickly reached the site.
  • The injured workers were taken to hospitals in Sakti and Raigarh for treatment.
  • The company, Vedanta Limited Chhattisgarh Thermal Power Plant, stated that the accident occurred in the Unit 1 boiler section.
  • It also clarified that the affected workers were from NTPC GE Power Services Ltd., a contractor working at the plant.
  • Another police officer explained that boilers operate at very high temperatures (around 600°C), and when the explosion happened, the heat and force spread across a large area, causing severe damage.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sadness over the incident.
  • A message from the Prime Minister’s office called the incident tragic and offered condolences to the victims’ families.
  • It also announced financial help of ₹2 lakh for the families of those who died and ₹50,000 for the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
  • Vishnu Deo Sai announced ₹5 lakh compensation for each deceased worker’s family and ₹50,000 for the injured.
  • He also said that officials have been instructed to provide immediate help and free medical treatment to all injured people.

Deportation Policy Proposes Formation of District-Level Task Force

  • The Union government has introduced a new deportation policy, asking all States to set up a special task force in every district.
  • The purpose of this task force is to find, identify, and deport illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar, and to submit monthly reports about foreigners who are missing or staying beyond their visa period.
  • States have been told to set up holding centres (camps) with 10-foot-high walls and barbed wire fencing to restrict the movement of such migrants until they are deported.
  • A maximum of 90 days has been fixed to verify the identity and background of suspected migrants, especially if they claim to be from another State.
  • If government land is not available, private buildings can be rented and used as holding centres.
  • States must also upload documents like Aadhaar cards, driving licences, and PAN cards obtained by illegal migrants on a portal so that these can be cancelled and the individuals blacklisted.
  • After the change of government in Bangladesh in August 2024, police across India were told to identify illegal Bangladeshi migrants.
  • This action became stronger after the Pahalgam terror attack (April 22, 2025) and Operation Sindoor (May 7, 2025).
  • In some cases, illegal migrants were sent back to Bangladesh using Indian Air Force planes.
  • There were also incidents where people from West Bengal were mistakenly sent to Bangladesh, but they were later brought back after intervention by the State government.
  • A large part of this policy, shared with States earlier, mainly repeats and combines existing rules, but includes a special section on migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar.
  • The rules for holding centres also apply to other foreign nationals waiting for deportation and those declared as foreigners by Foreigners’ Tribunals in Assam.
  • These centres must have:
  • Separate spaces for men and women
  • Basic facilities like LPG connections for cooking
  • Fire safety systems
  • Strict security and controlled entry
  • Enough open space inside the campus
  • It must also be ensured that family members are not separated and are kept together in the same centre.
  • People in these centres should be allowed to communicate with their families and contact their Embassy or High Commission.
  • States have also been directed to start verifying nationality immediately after arrest, so that travel documents are ready by the time legal procedures end, making deportation faster.
  • After deportation, the government can blacklist these individuals to stop them from entering India again.
  • In cases where people accidentally cross the border, they will be questioned, and if found innocent, they may be safely sent back.
  • If found guilty, they will be handed over to the police after recording their biometric details.
