Inflation needs to be tamed: Risk to consumption and growth

  • November 2023, the headline inflation has surged again. Although it is not surprising as the RBI has already predicted an uptick in the increase of risks volatile food prices pose.
  • The National Statistical Office’s data showed the consumer price Index has risen by 5.55% year on year which is three months high.
  • Food price gain which is measured by consumer price Index resurged by 209 basis points to 8.7% last month.
  • The food prices of cereals and vegetables which come under the ‘food and beverage’ subgroup reported 10.3% and 17.7% inflation respectively.
  • Cereals which are a major part of the consumer price Index around one tenth of CPI have logged double digit inflation from the last 15 months.
  • In November, a month on month acceleration in rice ,wheat and coarse cereal of jowar can also be seen.
  • Vegetable prices also reported high inflation year on year.
  • Apart from that, two main ingredients of masala such as ginger and garlic reported 100% rates of inflation.
  • Among vegetables, onion prices are a real state of concern where year on year prices surged to 86 %.
  • The main reasons for onion scarcity are inclement weather and depleting groundwater. These two reasons are responsible for a near 25% shortfall of onions in the country.
  • Government banned the export of onions due to shortages.
  • Only the prices of potatoes remained in deflationary territory.
  • Pulses also reported 20% inflation while sugar witnessed 6.55% price gain.
  • RBI has decided to not raise the benchmark interest rates to help the government to temper the inflation and the broader risk associated with consumption and growth.
