Trump survives assassination attempt at rally

Former U.S. President targeted in a shooting during a rally in Pennsylvania; FBI identifies the 20-year-old shooter, who was shot down by the U.S. Secret Service. One attendee at the rally was killed, and two other spectators sustained injuries. President Joe Biden calls for ‘unity’ and orders an independent security review of the events leading up to the attack.

  • Former U.S. President Donald Trump was shot at during a campaign rally on Saturday due to a significant security lapse. This attack is expected to impact this year’s presidential race.
  • Trump, 78, had just started his campaign speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, approximately 50 km north of Pittsburgh, when gunshots rang out, striking his right ear and causing blood to streak down his face.
  • “Fight! Fight! Fight!” Mr. Trump mouthed to supporters, pumping his fist, as Secret Service agents quickly escorted him away. His campaign reported that he was doing well.
  • The FBI has named Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the suspect. State voter records show he was a registered Republican, and he had made a $15 donation to a Democratic political action committee at the age of 17. Secret Service agents fatally shot him after he opened fire from the roof of a building approximately 140 meters from the stage where Mr. Trump was speaking, according to the agency.
  • On Sunday, U.S. President Joe Biden called for the country to “unite as one nation” and announced that he was ordering an independent security review of the events leading up to the attack.
  • Biden delivered brief remarks from the White House after receiving a briefing on the investigation in the Situation Room. He stated that he has directed the probe to be “thorough and swift” and urged the country not to “make assumptions” about the perpetrator’s motives or affiliations.
  • Sources reported that an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle used in the shooting was recovered near the shooter’s body.
  • Authorities identified the rally attendee who was shot and killed as 50-year-old Corey Comperatore from Sarver, Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro reported that Comperatore was killed while trying to protect his family by diving on top of them during the gunfire. At least two additional spectators were injured.
  • Law enforcement officials stated that they had not yet determined a motive for the attack.
  • The shooting took place less than four months before the November 5 election, where Mr. Trump is preparing for a rematch against Democratic President Joe Biden. Most opinion polls, including those by Reuters/Ipsos, indicate a close contest between the two.
  • Trump announced that he will be traveling to Milwaukee for the GOP convention on Sunday afternoon following the assassination attempt.

After the Army officer’s death, officials state that the spouse is rightfully entitled to the pension

  • Following allegations from the parents of the late Captain Anshuman Singh against their daughter-in-law Smriti Singh, Army sources have confirmed that the ₹1 crore from the Army Group Insurance Fund (AGIF) was split between his wife and parents, while the pension goes directly to the spouse. Furthermore, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declared an assistance package of ₹50 lakh, allocating ₹35 lakh to his wife and ₹15 lakh to his parents.
  • The officer’s wife is receiving certain benefits as she was named in the will, sources noted. Captain Singh’s father, a retired Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in the Army, is also a pensioner and receives additional benefits as an ex-serviceman. According to policy, once an officer gets married, his wife is designated as the pension nominee, an Army source explained.
  • Captain Anshuman Singh was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps in March 2020 and served as a medical officer with the 26 Punjab Regiment at the Chandan Complex on the Siachen Glacier. He lost his life on July 19, 2023, while rescuing individuals during a major fire and attempting to retrieve a medical aid box from an engulfed medical investigation room.
  • For his bravery, he was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, which was presented by President Droupadi Murmu to his wife and mother, Manju Singh, during a defense investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on July 5.
  • Days after the award ceremony, his parents, Ravi Pratap Singh and Manju Singh, claimed they were not allowed to touch the Kirti Chakra and called for changes to the Indian Army’s Next of Kin (NoK) criteria for financial assistance. Ms. Singh has not made any statements regarding the allegations.
  • “Nomination is entirely the officer’s decision. The spouse has no involvement in it. “She is entitled to the benefits as a bereaved wife,” a senior officer said on the condition of anonymity.
  • Officials explained that when an officer is commissioned into the Army, they execute a will nominating the Next of Kin (NoK) for insurance from the Army Group Insurance Fund (AGIF), Provident Fund, and other assets. While multiple nominees can be designated for these benefits, the pension does not allow for such options.
  • Since most officers are unmarried at the time of commissioning, their parents are typically nominated. After marriage, officers are required to update their nominations, allowing for the distribution percentages between the wife and parents for AGIF, PF, and other assets. “Funds and pensions are distributed by the Army accordingly,” stated an official.
  • If Anshuman’s wife is receiving the benefits, it is because he named her in his will. In Captain Singh’s case, the AGIF was divided 50% between his wife and parents, while the Provident Fund was allocated 100% to his wife.”

CUET-UG retest for more than 1,000 candidates scheduled for July 19: NTA

  • The National Testing Agency (NTA) has planned a retest for more than 1,000 CUET-UG candidates on July 19.
  • On July 7, the NTA released the provisional answer key for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG 2024 and announced that a retest would be conducted for candidates between July 15 and 19 if any grievances raised by students regarding the exam’s conduct were found to be valid.
  • While the agency announced the retest schedule on Sunday, it remained silent about the results, which have been delayed by over two weeks, with the final answer key still not released.
  • NTA sources suggest that one reason for the retest is the distribution of question papers in languages that candidates did not choose. The 1,000 affected candidates are spread across six states, with some grievances citing time lost due to receiving incorrect question papers.
  • Among the 1,000 candidates scheduled for the retest, 250 are from Oasis Public School in Hazaribagh, which is also being investigated for the alleged leak of the NEET-UG question paper.
  • Due to these grievances, a re-examination will be held for the affected candidates on July 19, 2024, in the Computer-Based Test format,” stated an official notification.
