BJP releases first list; both Deputy CMs included, Speaker missing from 71 names
- The BJP’s Central Election Committee on Tuesday released its first list of 71 candidates for the Bihar Assembly election. Out of them, only nine are women.
- Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary from Tarapur and Health Minister Mangal Pandey from Siwan, who are both members of the Bihar Legislative Council, will now contest the Assembly polls.
- Another Deputy CM, Vijay Kumar Sinha, will again contest from Lakhisarai. The list also includes 13 State Ministers and 46 sitting MLAs.
- However, ten sitting MLAs, including Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav, have been dropped. In his place, Ratnesh Kushwaha will contest from Patna Sahib as the BJP’s new candidate.
- Nand Kishore Yadav said he was thankful to the party and the people of Patna Sahib for their love and support, adding that he respected the BJP’s decision after serving seven consecutive terms.
- Other MLAs who were dropped include Motilal Prasad, Ramprit Paswan, Jai Prakash Yadav, Ram Surat Kumar, Nikki Hembram, Arun Sinha, Amrendra Pratap, Pranav Kumar, and Swarna Singh.
- Former MP Ram Kripal Yadav, who lost the Patliputra Lok Sabha seat in 2024 to Misa Bharti, has been fielded from the Danapur Assembly seat this time.
- The BJP has also changed candidates in seven constituencies it lost in 2020 — Sitamarhi, Siwan, Danapur, Bikram, Arwal, Aurangabad, and Gurua — to strengthen its performance this time.
- Seat adjustments also took place among NDA allies, with BJP now contesting in Tegra and Tarapur, which were earlier held by JD(U). This shows some internal reshuffling within the alliance.
- Rama Nishad, who joined BJP along with her husband Ajay Nishad just a day earlier, was given a ticket from Aurai, showing how quickly the party recognized her.
- Other women candidates in the list are Shreyasi Singh, Aruna Devi, Kavita Devi, Nisha Singh, Sweety Singh, Devanti Yadav, Gaytri Devi, and Renu Devi.
- Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur from Mithilanchal also joined the BJP in the presence of State president Dilip Kumar Jaiswal. She is likely to contest from Alinagar, Darbhanga.
- The BJP said the list represents all communities, including 20 OBCs, 11 EBCs, and six from SC/ST categories — meaning over half the seats have gone to socially and economically weaker groups.
- Caste-wise, 11 Bhumihars, seven Brahmins, 15 Rajputs, and 15 Kayasthas have been given tickets. Fresh faces will contest from Kumhrar, Patna Sahib, Rajnagar, and Aurangabad.
- The BJP has kept the Lalganj and Hajipur seats in Vaishali district, though many thought these might go to its ally LJP (Ram Vilas).
- It has also kept the Hisua seat in Nawada district, which LJP (RV) reportedly wanted during seat-sharing talks.
- The NDA seat-sharing agreement, finalised on Sunday, gives 101 seats each to BJP and JD(U), 29 to LJP (RV), and six each to Rashtriya Lok Morcha and HAM(S).
- The HAM(S) party released its list of six candidates, including Deepa Kumari (daughter-in-law of Jitan Ram Manjhi) from Imamganj, and Jyoti Devi (his sister-in-law) from Barachatti.
- Others include Anil Kumar (Tikari), Rohit Kumar (Atri), Praful Kumar Manjhi (Sikandra), and Lalan Ram (Kutumba), completing their list.
- Other NDA allies haven’t released their lists yet, though several JD(U) leaders like Anant Singh, Bijendra Prasad Yadav, and Umesh Singh Kushwaha have already filed nominations.

Durgapur Gang Rape Case: Police Recreate Crime Scene, Victim’s Male Friend Held
- In a shocking case, Durgapur Police on Tuesday recreated the crime scene of the gang rape of a medical student with all five accused and the victim’s male friend present.
- The survivor’s friend, a resident of Malda, was later arrested because his statements did not match the facts. This brings the total number of arrests to six.
- Two of the accused were also taken to their houses as police searched for hidden evidence linked to the case.
- The victim, a second-year medical student from Odisha, was allegedly gang-raped outside her private medical college in a forest area last Friday night.
- She had gone out for dinner with a friend before the attack happened near the college.
- Police had already arrested three people on Sunday and two more on Monday, before arresting the sixth (her friend) on Tuesday.
- All accused and the survivor’s friend were taken to the forest area to recreate the sequence of events that led to the crime.
- The entire process was video-recorded and checked against their earlier statements to confirm the truth.
- A forensic team also collected samples from the forest to help in the investigation and gather solid evidence.
- A senior police officer said the aim of the reconstruction was to find out each person’s exact role during the crime.
- Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Sunil Kumar Choudhary said the victim’s friend remains under questioning as his role is still not clear.
- He added that medico-legal tests of all accused have been completed, and police are waiting for the final medical reports.
- Based on the survivor’s statement and evidence, one person has been confirmed to have physically assaulted her, while the roles of others are being checked.
- Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke to the survivor and her mother over the phone, assuring full government support.
- BJP MP Pratap Sarangi from Balasore, Odisha, also visited her at a private hospital in Paschim Bardhaman district, where she is being treated.
- Sarangi and other BJP workers were initially stopped by hospital security, leading to an argument. They said they came to meet “our daughter.”
- Later, they were allowed to go inside and meet the survivor to show support and solidarity.
- In Kolkata, Bengal BJP workers started a symbolic campaign called “Operation Lal Mirch” (Operation Red Chilli).
- They handed out small packets of red chilli powder to women as a self-defence tool, saying it was a reminder of the rising threat to women’s safety in the state.
