PM claims plan to change border population

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while visiting Assam, said the government will start a big plan to stop a plot that tries to change the population near borders using outsiders, calling it a danger to India’s security.
  • Speaking at Mangaldoi in Darrang district, about 70 km from Guwahati, Modi accused some politicians of giving shelter to outsiders, saying this was a serious threat and must be stopped strongly.
  • Modi said he was ready to face the challenge from leaders who support outsiders, promising to drive them out, and warned that those who protect them will be punished by the people.
  • He blamed the Congress party for helping outsiders when it was in power, saying Congress wanted them to stay in India forever and decide the country’s future.
  • Modi also said Congress allowed outsiders to grab land belonging to farmers, tribal people, and even religious places, but under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP has taken back lakhs of bighas of land.
  • Giving an example, Modi spoke about Gorukhuti in Darrang district, where land was freed from outsiders. He said BJP is undoing Congress’s mistakes and protecting farmers and local people.
  • He also accused Congress of standing with anti-India groups and weakening the country by using vote-bank politics, while saying BJP works to keep citizens safe and protect the nation.
  • Talking about Operation Sindoor, Modi said Indian forces removed many terrorist leaders, but Congress sided with Pakistan’s army instead of India’s army, and pushed forward the agenda of those who support terrorism.
  • He also attacked former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, saying Nehru abandoned Assam during the 1962 war with China, and accused today’s Congress of still hurting the Northeast by ignoring its pain.
  • Earlier that day, Modi laid the foundation stones for health and infrastructure projects worth ₹6,300 crore in Mangaldoi, saying BJP is working for both development and security.

Centre reopens Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for white goods until October 14 citing market growth

  • The central government has reopened the application window for the PLI scheme in white goods (refer to large home appliances), saying the decision was taken because of growing demand and rising confidence in the industry after earlier success.
  • This PLI scheme is for companies making air conditioners and LED lights. The window was reopened because more companies are showing interest in investing in India’s growing manufacturing sector.
  • The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the step was taken because India has already started making important parts of ACs and LED lights successfully in earlier rounds.
  • Applications will be open from September 15 to October 14, giving companies one full month to apply if they want to join the scheme.
  • The government also said both new companies and those already selected earlier can apply again, if they want to make fresh investments, but must follow the rules of the scheme.
  • So far, 83 companies have been chosen under the PLI scheme for white goods, with a promise of investing ₹10,406 crore to grow the sector.
  • These investments will help India make not just ACs and LED lights, but also many small parts and components that are still not made in India today.
  • The Cabinet had first cleared this PLI scheme in April 2021, with a plan to boost manufacturing of parts and sub-assemblies of ACs and LED lights inside the country.
  • The scheme will run for seven years, from 2021-22 until 2028-29, and the government has kept a budget of ₹6,238 crore to support it.

Nepal’s New Prime Minister promises to listen to Gen Z protestors asking to ‘end corruption’

  • Nepal’s new interim Prime Minister, 73-year-old former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, promised that her government will listen to the youth protesters’ demand to end corruption, after their movement forced the earlier PM to step down.
  • Sushila Karki said her government will work according to the wishes of the Gen Z youth, and made it clear that those who spread violence will be punished, while protesters who lost their lives will be honored as martyrs.
  • According to the World Bank, unemployment is very high in Nepal, with 1 in 5 young people (aged 15–24) without jobs, and the country’s income per person is only $1,447.
  • The protests turned very violent — at least 72 people were killed in just two days, higher than the earlier figure of 51 deaths, and 191 were officially injured, according to the government’s top secretary Eaknarayan Aryal.
  • The Health Ministry spokesperson Prakash Budathoki said many bodies were found inside malls, houses, and other buildings that were set on fire or attacked, and the latest count shows 2,113 people injured.
  • This was the biggest unrest Nepal has faced since the monarchy was ended in 2008 and the civil war finished. The young protesters demanded an end to corruption, better governance, and fair opportunities for all.
  • Karki became Prime Minister after tough talks between army chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel, President Ram Chandra Paudel, and leaders of the Gen Z protest movement, who all agreed reforms were necessary.
