In his Independence Day address, the Prime Minister advocates for a ‘secular civil code’
In his 11th consecutive address to the nation from the Red Fort, Modi aims to eliminate a ‘communal civil code’ and put an end to religious discrimination. He also highlights the issue of women’s safety and warns that anarchic forces are attempting to destabilize the country.
- In his 11th consecutive Independence Day address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reiterated the BJP’s ideological commitment to implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He redefined it as a “secular civil code” embedded in the Constitution, aimed at promoting equality before the law for all citizens.
- The issue of a Uniform Civil Code in India, the Prime Minister emphasized, has been frequently addressed by the Supreme Court. A significant portion of the population believes that the current civil code is based on communal lines, which is accurate. A secular civil code is the pressing need today, which will eliminate discrimination religious. It is our responsibility to realize the vision of our Constitution’s framers, he stated.
- In addition to discussing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), a significant portion of the Prime Minister’s customary address focused on various current issues, delivering a sharp critique of the Opposition. While not directly mentioning the West Bengal government or the recent rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, Mr. Modi raised concerns about women’s safety.
- He said, “Our mothers, sisters, and daughters are being subjected to torture. There is a palpable anger among the people, and I can sense it. The nation, society, and state governments must take this issue seriously. Investigations need to be swift, and the culprits must be convicted quickly.”
- Prime Minister Modi also mentioned the presence of anarchic forces seeking to destabilize the country, particularly its economy. This was seen as another indirect reference to the Hindenburg Research report on the Adani Group, which BJP spokespersons have described as an effort to undermine Indian markets.
- He reaffirmed his commitment to combating corruption and condemned the tendency in some circles to glorify it. He also expressed his willingness to face the consequences of pursuing corruption and those involved in it.
- The Prime Minister took a practical approach when discussing Bangladesh. He acknowledged the concerns about recent events in the neighboring country, expressing hope for a quick return to normalcy. “To peace we are dedicated and extend our best wishes for the continued development of Bangladesh,” he stated.
- The Prime Minister addressed the ongoing debate around the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical education, assuring that his government would increase the number of medical education seats nationwide by 75,000.
- In his longest Independence Day speech in 11 years, spanning 98 minutes, Mr. Modi also reviewed his government’s performance over the past decade, highlighting the speed and purposefulness of the reforms it has implemented.
A mob attack fails to suppress doctors’ fight for justice in Bengal
- Hours after a mob vandalized their protest site at the emergency ward of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) early Thursday morning, junior doctors, students, and nurses persisted in their protest against the rape and murder of a female doctor on duty.
- Around one hundred intoxicated individuals entered the hospital grounds shortly after midnight, while thousands of people in Kolkata and other places participated in “Reclaim the Night” protests. They vandalized the protest site, tearing down posters and damaging hospital property, including medicines, ventilators, stretchers, and beds.
- Twelve individuals have been detained by the Kolkata Police in relation to the mob violence. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attributed the attack to “politically motivated outsiders intent on creating problems in the State” and called on the protesting doctors to resume their duties.
- Junior doctors, medicos, and paramedics at RGKMCH and other hospitals in the State have been protesting for the past week, calling for justice for the victim and enhanced safety measures at hospitals.
- Despite the vandalism, the protesting doctors rebuilt the protest site and continued their demonstration, which intensified with the arrival of the new principal, Suhrita Pal.
- Nurses on duty during the mob violence confronted Ms. Pal at the protest site, inquiring about future security measures, to which Ms. Pal responded that she was unaware of any details regarding the vandalism.
- In the evening, the principal spoke to the press and the protesting doctors, assuring them that security at the RGKMCH premises had been increased. “We are taking all necessary measures to ensure safety and security,” she stated.
- “When the mob arrived, some police officers asked if they could hide among us and even requested civilian clothes after entering the gynecology ward,” recalled one of the protesting nurses. “They are meant to protect us, but instead, we ended up protecting them. Higher authorities did nothing to safeguard us.”
- “The seminar room where the crime occurred, the Kolkata Police reported on X, remains untouched and intact.”
- Banerjee informed local media that a mob ‘brutally attacked the police,’ resulting in a Deputy Commissioner being found unconscious with head injuries. The police opted not to use force and instead chose a peaceful approach.
- The Chief Minister clarified that she does not hold the protesting doctors responsible but urged them to return to work.”
Army recruitment scam uncovered; one arrested in Ahmednagar
- An Army recruitment scam has been exposed in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, by the Army’s Military Intelligence (MI). One person has been arrested.
- The suspect deceived several individuals by falsely claiming he had connections with senior officers and could secure them jobs as Army cooks and in civil posts within the defense sector, collecting ₹8,30,000 in the process.
- Acting on specific information, the MI, in collaboration with Camp Police Ahmednagar, apprehended Vijay Bisht and filed a first information report. During interrogation, Bisht admitted to starting his fraudulent activities in the name of Army recruitment in 2023. Further details regarding possible additional accomplices are expected to emerge in due course.
- So far, at least 10 individuals have been identified as victims of the scam, and this number is expected to increase as the investigation continues.
- “This scam involves a typical scheme where positions in the Army—such as cooks, gardeners, and drivers—are offered in exchange for money. In the past two years, there have been at least 25 similar cases reported,” a knowledgeable source said.
- The source also noted that many individuals were targeted at recruitment rallies or coaching institutes.
- The Army regularly advertises and campaigns to emphasize that the only legitimate way to join is through recruitment rallies. Initially, a written examination is conducted, and those who pass are then invited for a physical fitness test.
