  • SDO-1 of Sambhal, Santosh Tripathi, stated that the team was there to replace the old meter with a smart meter.

Police announce reward for information on accused in Sunil Pal kidnapping case

  • Police in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, announced a ₹25,000 reward for each of the five absconding accused in the comedian and actor Sunil Pal’s kidnapping case.
  • The individuals who are absconding have been identified as Lavi Pal, also known as Sushant and Himanshu; Akash, also referred to as Gola and Deependra; Shiva; Ankit, nicknamed Pahadi; and Shubham.
  • According to Senior Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada, intensive efforts are underway, including ongoing raids, to trace and apprehend the accused individuals.
  • Arjun Karnwal, another accused, was previously arrested by Meerut police after an encounter in connection with the case.
  • Sunil Pal was allegedly abducted on December 2 under the pretext of performing at an event.
  • The kidnappers detained him for almost 24 hours and freed him after extracting a ransom of ₹8 lakh.
  • Following the incident, Sunil Pal’s wife filed an FIR in Mumbai, which was later transferred to Lal Kurti police station in Meerut.
  • In a similar incident, Bollywood actor Mushtaq Khan was also kidnapped and held hostage in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, recently.

SC maintains status quo in Malankara Church dispute until the next hearing

  • The Supreme Court has directed the maintenance of the current situation in the ongoing dispute between the Jacobite and Orthodox factions of the Malankara Church, ensuring no changes take place ahead of Christmas.
  • The case will be heard in detail on January 29 and 30.
  • A Bench led by Justice Surya Kant decided on status quo due to difficulties expressed by both factions in complying with the December 3 order.
  • The December 3 order directed the Jacobite faction to transfer administration of six churches in Ernakulam and Palakkad districts to the Orthodox faction, in line with previous judgments and the 1934 Church constitution.
  • Senior advocate C.U. Singh, representing the Orthodox faction, argued that a status quo order contradicts the December 3 decision.
  • Justice Kant emphasized the need to prevent untoward incidents and assured that the administration would be strengthened to maintain control.
  • The Kerala government was directed to submit details of the Orthodox Christian population, churches under each faction’s control, disputed churches, their current administration status, and parish registers.
  • The court urged both groups to maintain peace and harmony and asked the State to mediate.
  • The status quo will remain effective until the next hearing in late January.
