Controversy arises over directive requiring eateries on Kanwar Yatra route in Uttar Pradesh to display owners’ names
- The police have mandated that all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route must display the names of their owners to prevent any “confusion.” Opposition parties view this move as targeting Muslim traders.
- Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera labeled the order as “State-sponsored bigotry.” AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi compared it to apartheid and the Judenboykott, the boycott of Jewish businesses in Nazi Germany.
- Muzaffarnagar Superintendent of Police Abhishek Singh stated, “Preparations for the Sawan month have begun in the district. Approximately 240 km of the Kanwar Yatra route passes through the district.”
- All eateries along the route, including hotels, dhabas, and carts, have been instructed to display the names of their proprietors or workers. “This step aims to prevent misunderstandings among Kanwariyas and mitigate any potential law and order challenges. Everyone is complying voluntarily,” he informed reporters.
- Both AIMIM and the Congress have shared a video of Mr. Singh’s statement about the order. In a post on X, Mr. Khera said, “It is imperative that not only political parties but also all conscientious individuals and the media unite against this government-backed prejudice. We must prevent the BJP from regressing the country into a darker era..”
- AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi posted in Hindi on X, stating, “As per the directive from Uttar Pradesh Police, every food shop or cart owner is required to prominently display their name on a board to avoid Kanwariyas inadvertently purchasing from Muslim-owned establishments. This measure draws parallels to practices known as Apartheid in South Africa and Judenboycott in Hitler’s Germany.”
- On July 9, the VHP claimed that Muslims were selling puja items at various Hindu pilgrimage sites by “concealing” their identity. They urged all state governments to take effective steps to prevent them from operating such shops.
