Industrial Production Growth Eases to 4% in August

  • Industrial growth in India slowed to 4% in August, down from 4.3% in July, mainly because consumer goods and manufacturing did not grow strongly.
  • Government data showed that weak growth in capital goods and infrastructure also pulled numbers down, though mining, electricity, and primary goods showed signs of good recovery.
  • The Ministry of Statistics released the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) data, confirming 4% growth in August, which was much better than 0% growth last year.
  • Bank of Baroda’s chief economist Madan Sabnavis said the data did not show tariff and GST effects, since they started affecting business sentiment later in the year.
  • Tariffs were put in place on August 27, while GST benefits came only at the end of September, so their real impact did not show in August’s figures.
  • Mining and quarrying grew by 6% in August, its best result in 14 months, ending four straight months of contraction that had been recorded earlier.
  • The primary goods sector also did well, growing 5.2% in August, the highest in seven months, which helped the overall industrial recovery in the country.
  • Electricity production rose 4.1% in August, the best growth in five months, showing stronger demand and supply in India’s power needs for industries.
  • Manufacturing slowed to 3.8% growth in August, compared with 6% in July, but it was still much higher than the 1.2% growth seen last year.
  • Capital goods grew by 4.4% in August, lower than 6.7% in July, but better than the 0% growth seen in August 2023, showing small improvement.
  • Consumer durables grew only 3.5% in August, compared with 7.3% in July and 5.4% last year, showing weak household and festival demand.
  • Consumer non-durables fell badly, shrinking by 6.3% in August, the worst in eight months, and became the biggest reason for the slowdown in production.

Two Railway Links to Provide Easy Connectivity to Bhutan

  • The Indian government announced two rail links with Bhutan — Kokrajhar-Gelephu and Banarhat-Samtse — covering 89 km, costing ₹4,033 crore, the first such projects.
  • Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the MoU was signed during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bhutan visit in March 2024, and later formalized in New Delhi.
  • Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India is Bhutan’s biggest trading partner, with most of Bhutan’s imports and exports going through Indian ports, making trains very important.
  • The two projects will connect Bhutan to 1,50,000 km of Indian Railways. Kokrajhar-Gelephu will take four years, and Banarhat-Samtse will finish in three years.
  • The Kokrajhar-Gelephu route will have six stations, two viaducts, 29 big bridges, 65 small bridges, two goods sheds, one flyover, and 39 underpasses.
  • The Banarhat-Samtse route will have two stations, one big flyover, 24 small flyovers, and 37 underpasses. It is designed for Vande Bharat trains, costing ₹577 crore.
  • Vaishnaw said the rail lines will boost tourism, industries, goods transport, and people’s movement, bringing Bhutan all the usual benefits that railways normally provide.
  • India has promised ₹10,000 crore to Bhutan for its 13th Five-Year Plan (2024–2029), which is double the help given in the 12th Plan earlier.
  • Bhutan will also benefit from the Jogighopha Inland Waterways Terminal opened in February, along with stronger India-Bhutan work together on hydropower projects.
  • The countries have completed five big hydropower projects together: Chukha, Tala, Mangdechhu, Kurichhu, and the new Punatsangchhu II, showing deep energy cooperation.

FIR alleges TVK delayed Vijay’s arrival

  • Police in Karur filed an FIR saying Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) delayed actor Vijay’s arrival on purpose to show strength, which caused a deadly stampede.
  • The death toll rose to 41 after a woman died at Karur Government Medical College on Monday; victims suffered heat, dehydration, and exhaustion in the crowd.
  • The FIR was filed by Karur Town police under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Tamil Nadu law on public property damage, naming three TVK leaders.
  • Police detained Mathiazhagan for questioning on Monday after naming him accused. The FIR said organisers failed to give water, medical help, or crowd safety.
  • About 500 police and guards handled security at Velusamypuram. People gathered from 10 a.m., expecting Vijay at noon, but kept waiting for hours in the heat.
  • Police gave permission for the rally from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., but organisers delayed Vijay’s arrival by four hours, worsening crowd pressure and excitement.
  • Mathiazhagan’s request said only 10,000 people would attend, but over 25,000 came. Vijay entered Karur district by 4.45 p.m. through Velayuthampalayam border.
  • Police inspector and Deputy Superintendent warned organisers Anand, Nirmal Kumar, and Mathiazhagan many times about the dangerous crowd, but they ignored safety advice.
  • The FIR said there was no control: people climbed tin sheds and trees. Sheds collapsed, branches broke, and people suffered falls, suffocation, and breathlessness.
  • This led to panic, injuries, and deaths. The FIR blamed the organisers’ actions and neglect as the direct cause of the Karur tragedy during Vijay’s campaign.
