In the rape and murder case of a doctor, the Supreme Court intervenes

A suo motu cognizance of the incident has been taken by the Supreme Court, and tomorrow, the case will be heard by a Bench of three judges, led by the Chief Justice of India. Protests continue despite the doctors’ strike ending. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is preparing to submit a ‘safety document’ to the Union Health Ministry, outlining a plan to make healthcare institutions safer. Meanwhile, over 70 Padma award-winning doctors have appealed to the Prime Minister for immediate intervention.

  • On Sunday, the Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The case, initiated by the court itself, will be heard on Tuesday by a three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud.
  • The case will be scheduled for a hearing at the top of the list of cases for the day before the Bench. The court’s suo moto intervention comes after an order from the Calcutta High Court on August 13, which transferred the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The police had previously arrested a civil police volunteer in connection with the case.
  • The body of the doctor was reportedly found in the seminar room of the hospital. Post-mortem and inquest reports uncovered disturbing details of severe injuries.
  • The Indian Medical Association (IMA) concluded its 24-hour strike on Sunday morning, announcing the formation of a committee to create a “safety document” for the Union Health Ministry.
  • The document, expected to be completed later this week, will outline a plan to ensure the safety of healthcare workers in medical institutions, according to IMA President R.V. Asokan.
  • The IMA expressed support for the Resident Doctors’ Association of Delhi, stating they will back the continued agitation if deemed necessary, referring to them as the “soldiers on the ground.”
  • On Saturday, the Health Ministry urged the protesting doctors to return to work, citing the broader public interest and the increasing cases of dengue and malaria. The ministry also assured the doctors that a committee would be established to propose all possible measures to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals.
  • Over 70 Padma award-winning doctors have expressed their solidarity with the protesting doctors, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene swiftly to ensure the safety of healthcare workers. In a letter, the group voiced their deep concern and distress over the horrifying incidents at the Kolkata hospital.
  • The doctors expressed unwavering solidarity with the victim’s family and extended full support to the medical community, acknowledging the rising violence faced by healthcare professionals in their line of duty.

The Defence Minister has inaugurated a new Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Chennai

  • On Sunday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a new MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) of the Coast Guard in Chennai.
  • At the event, he also inaugurated two new Coast Guard units via video-conferencing: the Regional Marine Pollution Response Centre (RMPRC) in Chennai and a Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry.
  • The new MRCC will improve coordination for rescuing mariners and fishermen in distress at sea, according to a release. It is equipped with the latest technology for monitoring distress signals via terrestrial and satellite systems, as well as advanced communication systems.
  • According to the release, the central hub will ensure the safety and well-being of fishermen and mariners by coordinating all maritime rescue operations on the east coast of India and beyond.
  • The RMPRC, located at the Chennai Port, is the first facility of its kind designed to coordinate responses to marine pollution in the waters adjacent to the coastal states of the Indian Ocean Region.
  • The Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry will be equipped with Chetak and Advanced Light Helicopter Squadrons. These indigenously built helicopters are capable of performing maritime patrols, search and rescue operations, and other missions from both land and Coast Guard ships at sea.
