Narendra Modi Meets Jonas Gahr Støre as India and Norway Strengthen Ties with Green Strategic Partnership

  • Jonas Gahr Støre said in New Delhi on Monday that even though India and Norway have some differences, both countries should stand together against nations that use diplomacy, trade, and technology as weapons. India and Norway raised their bilateral ties to a “Green Strategic Partnership”.
  • During their media statements, both Prime Ministers spoke about global conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
Modi said these wars have created “instability and uncertainty” across the world.
At the same time, he said India and Europe are entering a “new golden era” in their relationship.
  • Modi stated that India and Norway both support a rules-based international order, dialogue, and diplomacy.
He added that both countries believe no issue can be solved through military conflict.
  • Speaking about the wars in Ukraine and West Asia, Mr. Modi said India and Norway support every effort that can help bring peace and end the conflicts quickly.
  • Modi also said that the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement signed last year between India and the four EFTA countries — Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Liechtenstein — along with the newly announced Green Strategic Partnership, would combine India’s scale, speed, and skilled talent with Norway’s technology and investment.
  • He further said that cooperation between the two countries is now growing in new sectors such as the Arctic region, outer space, green shipping, the blue economy, energy security, and food security.
  • Modi said the EFTA agreement is expected to bring $100 billion in investments and create one million jobs in India.
  • Støre described India as a major global power in technology, innovation, and renewable energy.
  • In an indirect reference to the Russia-Ukraine war, Mr. Støre admitted that India and Norway do not agree on every issue, but said both countries should continue working together despite differences.
  • Earlier, Norway had asked India to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and reduce its imports of Russian oil.
Norway is also trying to offer India alternative supplies of oil and gas, as Norway is one of the world’s major exporters of these resources.
  • Støre said countries should oppose attempts to “weaponise” diplomacy, trade, and technology.
  • He said that at a time when protectionism and geopolitical tensions are increasing, it is more important than ever for countries to stand together in support of a rules-based international order.
  • His remarks appeared to be aimed not only at Russia, but also at the United States and China over unilateral actions and protectionist policies, and at Iran over the blockade in the Strait of Hormuz that has affected global energy trade.
  • Støre said India and Norway may not agree on every matter, which is normal between democratic countries.
  • He added that both nations are respectful democracies and handle disagreements according to democratic values and standards.
  • After the leaders completed their statements, an unusual incident took place when a Norwegian journalist stood up and protested because journalists were not allowed to ask questions during the event attended by media persons from both countries.
  • Earlier, during Mr. Modi’s visit to the Netherlands, Dutch media had also criticised the absence of a formal press conference, which is usually a normal practice there.
  • While Mr. Modi did not react to the protest, Mr. Støre later returned to the media room and spoke separately with local journalists.
  • On Tuesday, the two Prime Ministers are scheduled to join leaders from Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, and Finland at the Nordic-India summit.

Iran Presents New Peace Proposal; U.S. Indicates Possible Relief in Sanctions

  • Iran has sent a new 14-point proposal to the United States through Pakistan in an attempt to end the war, at a time when diplomatic talks remain stuck and fears of fresh fighting continue.
At the same time, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that Iran “will not bow to any power.”
  • Earlier, on April 10, Iran had already responded to an American proposal, but U.S. President Donald Trump rejected it, calling it “totally unacceptable.”
  • According to Iranian officials, Tehran suggested that talks should first focus on ending the war, while discussions on the nuclear issue could happen later.
  • After receiving Iran’s proposal, the U.S. sent a formal reply, and Iran’s latest 14-point proposal is considered a response to that American message.
  • An Iranian official quoted by Tasnim news agency said Iran once again submitted its revised 14-point document through Pakistan as part of the ongoing exchange of messages between the two countries.
  • Tasnim also quoted another Iranian official who claimed that the U.S. had agreed to temporarily suspend sanctions on Iran during the negotiation period.
  • Iran has repeatedly said that complete removal of sanctions imposed on the country must be part of any final agreement.
  • According to the report, the U.S. proposed a temporary waiver of OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) sanctions until a final agreement is reached.
  • The United States, along with Israel, launched the war on February 28 and later announced a ceasefire on April 8, saying that progress had been made in negotiations.
  • Iranian and American officials held one round of direct talks in Islamabad on April 11, but the discussions ended without any major success.
  • Soon after the talks failed, Mr. Trump announced a blockade of Iranian ports.
  • Iran, which had taken control of the Strait of Hormuz after the war began, demanded that the U.S. remove the blockade as a confidence-building step to continue negotiations.
  • On Sunday, Iran announced the formation of a new organisation called the Persian Gulf Strait Authority to supervise and control the strait.

CBI Arrests Latur Coaching Centre Owner in NEET Paper Leak Case

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested the owner of a coaching centre in Latur, Maharashtra, for his alleged role in the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak case.
  • Shivaraj Motegaonkar, owner of Renukai Chemistry Classes Coaching Institute, was arrested by the CBI.
The institute prepares students for the undergraduate medical entrance examination and has nine branches, with its main office in Latur.
  • According to officials, Mr. Motegaonkar is closely linked with chemistry lecturer P.V. Kulkarni, who was earlier arrested by the CBI for allegedly leaking chemistry questions that appeared in the examination held on May 3.
  • Searches at the coaching institute and at Mr. Motegaonkar’s house led to the recovery of a chemistry question bank containing questions exactly matching those asked in the examination, the agency said.
  • The CBI stated that during the last 24 hours, it carried out searches at five different places and seized several important documents, laptops, and mobile phones.
A detailed examination of the seized materials is now going on.
  • The agency registered the case on May 12 after receiving a written complaint from the Department of Higher Education under the Ministry of Education.
After that, special investigation teams were formed to follow different leads in the case.
  • Among those arrested earlier was senior botany teacher Manisha Gurunath Mandhare from Pune, who allegedly leaked biology questions.
  • According to the CBI, Ms. Mandhare had full access to the botany and zoology question papers.
During April 2026, she allegedly contacted NEET candidates through Manisha Waghmare from Pune, who had already been arrested on May 14.
  • The agency alleged that Ms. Mandhare conducted special coaching classes for selected students at her home in Pune.
  • During these classes, she allegedly explained and revealed several botany and zoology questions, asked students to write them down, and instructed them to mark the same questions in their textbooks.
  • The CBI stated that many of these questions were exactly the same as those that later appeared in the actual examination paper.
  • Manisha Waghmare, who runs a beauty salon, allegedly helped P.V. Kulkarni by bringing students to the special coaching sessions.
  • The other people arrested in the case include Dhananjay Lokhande from Ahilyanagar, Shubham Khairnar from Nashik in Maharashtra, Mangilal Biwal, Vikas Biwal, and Dinesh Biwal from Jaipur, and Yash Yadav from Gurugram.
  • The CBI said that the investigation so far has identified the original source of the leaked chemistry and biology papers, which had been circulated before the examination.
  • The agency also stated that the “middlemen” who helped bring students to the special coaching classes, where leaked questions were discussed, have also been arrested.
  • Nearly 23 lakh candidates had registered for the NEET-UG examination, which was conducted across the country by the National Testing Agency.
