  • These negative impacts of social media are also the result of unleashing powerful technologies without proper safety measures, transparency and accountability.
  • Addressing the mental health crisis linked to social media requires a multifaceted approach involving individuals, communities, educators, health professionals, and policymakers.
  • Social media platforms often showcase idealized versions of people’s lives. Constant exposure to these curated images and stories can lead to negative social comparison, where individuals feel inadequate compared to others. This can lower self-esteem and contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety.
  • Educating users, especially young people, about the realities of social media, including the tendency for people to present idealized versions of their lives can help to reduce the negative impacts of social media on mental health.
  • Encouraging users to monitor and limit their time on social media to avoid excessive use can also be useful.
