Trump Government Raises H-1B Visa Fee to $100,000
- S. President Donald Trump has announced a huge increase in H-1B visa fees. The cost has gone up from the earlier range of $2,000–$5,000 to a fixed amount of $100,000, which is around ₹90 lakh in Indian currency.
- The Indian government has shown concern about this sudden move, saying it could cause “humanitarian problems”. Officials said they are studying the order carefully and have asked Indian embassies abroad to help H-1B visa holders and their families in this situation.
- The order will come into effect from midnight, September 20, New York time. Because of this, many visa holders are hurrying to return to the U.S. before the new rules start.
- Trump’s order also told the Secretary of Homeland Security not to approve H-1B visa applications from people living outside the U.S. unless the application includes payment of the new $100,000 fee.
- This step has come just before India and the U.S. are set to begin trade agreement talks. Trump’s order has also asked the Departments of State, Labour, and Homeland Security to take all steps needed to implement the new rules.
- The White House explained that the decision was taken because many American workers are losing jobs to foreign workers who come in through the H-1B visa route. Officials pointed out that in 2003, around 32% of IT jobs were held by H-1B visa holders, but now the number has gone above 65%. The administration has called this both an economic problem and a security risk.
- India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the full impact of this order is still being studied by all concerned departments. The MEA highlighted that people-to-people connections and technology partnerships have always been strong between India and the U.S.
- MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that movement of skilled workers between the two countries encourages new ideas, competition, economic growth, and creation of wealth. He also warned that this sudden change could create humanitarian issues for many families.
- Sources in India suggested that the government sees this move as pressure from Trump ahead of the trade talks. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is expected to lead the Indian delegation for these talks on September 22.
