Iran undecided on fresh talks; Trump to continue blockade

  • Iran said on Monday that it has not yet made up its mind about joining a new round of peace talks with the United States in Pakistan. It mentioned “bad faith” and “historical mistrust” as reasons. At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump said the naval blockade on Iran will continue “until a deal is reached.”
  • Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, said that no final decision has been taken about the next round of talks. He added that Iran will think carefully and decide what to do next based on its national interest, according to Tasnim News Agency.
  • Baqaei said that from the very beginning of the ceasefire, Iran faced “bad faith” from the U.S., along with confusing and opposite statements. He also mentioned the naval blockade and said that even after some understanding was reached, Iran still faced “maritime actions” in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • He also talked about a U.S. attack on an Iranian-flagged ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, calling it part of these actions.
  • In an interview with The New York Post, Trump did not take Iran’s statements too seriously. He said he is open to meeting Iranian leaders if there is progress. He also said that talks are expected and “nobody is playing games.”
  • Trump said that Vice-President J.D. Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner would take part in the talks.
  • Later, Trump wrote on social media that he was winning the war in a big way, and that the other side was confused. He also said that the blockade is causing Iran losses of $500 million per day and will continue until a deal is made.
  • He also claimed that the deal his government wants will be better than the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He said such a deal would bring peace and safety not just for Israel, but also for the Middle East, Europe, the United States, and the whole world.
  • Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian replied by saying that the U.S. wants Iran to surrender, but Iran will never give in to pressure.
  • He spoke about deep mistrust of the U.S. and said that confusing and negative signals from American leaders make it seem like they want Iran to surrender, which the Iranian people will not accept.
  • Earlier, Iran had said it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz for commercial ships after Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah.
  • Trump thanked Iran for reopening the route but made it clear that the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, announced on April 12 after failed talks in Islamabad, will continue until a deal is reached.
  • Later, Iran changed its stand again and took control of the Strait of Hormuz once more, which is a very important route for global trade.
  • On Saturday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at two oil tankers and stopped them from passing through the strait. After this, Trump again warned that he could target Iran’s civilian infrastructure.
  • Tasnim reported that the U.S. Navy attacked an Iranian container ship named “Touska” on Sunday night while it was travelling from China to Iran and then took control of it.
