Bangladesh deploys Army as unrest death toll reaches 133
Soldiers patrol deserted streets under a curfew imposed due to student-led protests nationwide. The internet shutdown persists, text messaging services are offline, and media organizations remain inaccessible.
- On Saturday, soldiers patrolled the streets of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, setting up roadblocks during a curfew imposed in response to student-led protests against government job quotas. The protests have resulted in at least 133 deaths this week.
- Internet and text messaging services have been suspended since Thursday, isolating the nation as police cracked down on protesters defying a ban on public gatherings.
- Overseas telephone calls mostly could not connect, and websites of Bangladesh-based media organizations did not update, with their social media accounts remaining inactive. “The army has been deployed across the country to manage the law and order situation,” said armed forces spokesperson Shahdat Hossain.
- The curfew was relaxed for two hours from noon on Saturday to enable people to shop for supplies and carry out other tasks. Local media reported that it will continue until 10 a.m. on Sunday, when the government will evaluate the situation and determine the next steps.
- Along with the fatalities, the clashes have caused injuries to thousands, as reported by hospitals throughout Bangladesh. Dhaka Medical College Hospital received 27 bodies between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday.
- At daybreak, the streets of Dhaka were almost deserted, with troops on foot and in armored personnel carriers patrolling the sprawling megacity of 20 million people.
- Later in the day, thousands reemerged on the streets in the residential area of Rampura. Police fired at the crowd, wounding at least one person. Protester Nazrul Islam, 52, commented at the scene, “We are in a dire situation. The country is in chaos… They are shooting at people indiscriminately.”
- Reuters TV footage showed armed soldiers surveying roads littered with stones and debris, with shops remaining shuttered. Trees and barricades were uprooted on streets lined with charred vehicles. During the curfew relaxation, young men played football on a deserted road.
Boy infected with Nipah in critical condition; health protocols implemented in Kerala
The 15-year-old is currently receiving ventilator support at a hospital in Kozhikode. Health Minister Veena George has rushed to Malappuram to oversee measures to control the spread of the virus, and three individuals have been quarantined.
- The Nipah virus scare resurfaced in Malappuram district of Kerala on Saturday following the confirmation of a case being treated at a private hospital in Kozhikode.
- A 15-year-old boy from Chembrassery near Pandikkad, who developed Nipah symptoms and was transferred from a hospital in Perinthalmanna to Kozhikode, is reported to be in critical condition and is receiving ventilator support at Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital.
- The hospital’s pay ward has been transformed into an isolation unit for treating Nipah patients. Ten beds have been set up, and several doctors and nurses have been assigned to the area, instructed to use personal protective equipment. Additionally, fourteen committees have been established for surveillance, treatment, and other related tasks.
- Kerala Health Minister Veena George hurried to Malappuram to supervise the measures to curb the virus’s spread. At a press briefing on Saturday, she announced that the Nipah virus had been confirmed by the National Institute of Virology in Pune and state labs.
- Health Department authorities have activated the Nipah protocol, establishing 25 committees according to the government’s SOP to prevent the virus’s spread. Three individuals, including the child’s father, who had close contact with the patient, have been quarantined.
- The boy started showing feverish symptoms on July 10 and sought care at a private clinic on July 12. He reached a hospital in Pandikkad on July 13 and was admitted on July 15. He was later transferred to a private hospital in Perinthalmanna before being moved to Kozhikode.
- The Health Department has also established a 24/7 control room. Ms. George asserted that the department is fully equipped to handle the Nipah outbreak. She added that the monoclonal antibody required for treating Nipah is being transported from the Pune lab and is expected to arrive in Kozhikode on Sunday.
- She added that masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) were being urgently sent to the medical college hospitals in Kozhikode and Malappuram.
- George stated that the situation was under control but urged people to exercise extreme caution. Health officials in the state advised wearing masks due to the scare, and the Minister also launched a renewed safety campaign in Malappuram.
- Kerala reported its first Nipah case in May 2018, causing widespread fear in Kozhikode. Since then, Nipah cases have been confirmed four times in the state, with the most recent case reported in September 2023.
29 People Hospitalized After Gas Leak at Seafood Plant in Tamil Nadu
Operation of the plant on the outskirts of Thoothukudi has been suspended following a minor gas leak. Officials are examining the facility, which employs approximately 300 workers, predominantly women.
- Officials reported that twenty-nine women workers at a seafood processing plant on the outskirts of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu experienced “moderate breathing problems” around Friday midnight due to a gas leak.
- Of those affected, 22 women undergoing treatment at three private hospitals in the town are safe and stable, while seven have been discharged after receiving first aid.
- Operation of the plant has been suspended due to the “minor gas leak,” while officials from various departments inspect the unit, which employs 300 workers, mostly women, at Pudur Pandiapuram on the Thoothukudi-Madurai Highway.
- After processing and packing the seafood, the workers had dinner around 11:10 p.m. on Friday. At that time, they experienced “suffocation and a burning sensation in the eyes” as “white-colored smoke” partially filled the dining hall. All 29 workers—21 from Kumbakonam and 8 from Odisha—were promptly taken to three private hospitals in Thoothukudi.
- “Four of the patients are being monitored in the intensive care unit, while the remaining individuals are in the general ward receiving treatment to counteract the gas toxicity. All are currently stable,” according to officials from the Department of Public Health who examined the victims at the hospitals.
- An official suggested that the “gas leak” was probably due to a suspected short circuit in the cooling unit. “After inhaling the gas, the workers were affected and were swiftly transported to three hospitals. Six of them were discharged immediately after receiving first aid,” the official explained. He strongly refuted the claim that ammonia leakage caused the incident.
- Five fire tenders arrived at the scene, extinguishing the gas leak with water and clearing the gas by 2 p.m. Two firefighters also experienced suffocation and were admitted to the hospital for treatment, but officials reported that they are now stable.
- Public Health Department officials stated that the victims did not have the smell of ammonia on them when they were admitted to the hospital.
- A senior public health department official stated, “We can rule out the possibility of an ammonia leak only after a joint inspection by officials from various departments, including the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Revenue, Police, Labour Welfare, Public Health, and Fire and Rescue Services.”
