U.S. Approves Missile Deal with India as Trade Dispute Subsides
- The U.S. State Department has approved selling Javelin missiles and Excalibur artillery shells worth $92.8 million to India, showing that trade tensions between the two countries are decreasing. The DSCA informed the U.S. Congress as required.
- Press notes said these sales will help U.S. foreign policy and security, because they strengthen America’s partnership with India, which the U.S. calls a major defence partner that supports stability and peace in the Indo-Pacific region.
- These new defence deals came after India announced its first long-term agreement to buy American LPG. India has asked for 216 M982A1 Excalibur shells, which help the Army hit targets with better accuracy and precision during operations.
- According to the DSCA, India will be able to easily add these Excalibur shells to its military system. The sale includes high-precision tools to help India face current and future threats in different kinds of battlefield situations.
- In another release, DSCA confirmed that India also wants 100 FGM-148 Javelin missiles, one additional missile, and 25 command launch units. These weapons will help India strengthen homeland defence and discourage regional threats.
- The Excalibur deal costs $47.1 million, while the Javelin deal costs $45.7 million. Along with the weapons, India will also get fire control systems, iPIK, primers, propellant charges, technical support, repair services, data, and logistics and programme assistance.
- The sixth round of talks on the Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) happened in October (it was earlier expected in August). Indian officials said the first part of the BTA may be finished soon, showing good progress.
