We all are aware of the importance of reading The Hindu newspaper with the aspect of improving reading ability, easily comprehending paragraphs, getting updated with the current events, improving essay writing and many more. For a banking aspirant it becomes necessary to read editorials for vocabulary. In this article we are going to discuss the points of today’s editorials with practice questions and important vocabs.

Junk food vs healthy food

  • Nutrition Transition” is a process that can be seen in many countries including India where people are shifting away from traditional food and opting for junk food.
  • In comparison to junk food, traditional foods are rich in fiber and comprise mostly whole food. Whereas the western style diet is processed and high in calories.
  • The main reasons behind this significant shift are economic progress, urbanization, surge in consumption of packaged and processed foods.
  • Junk foods are becoming very popular among people in spite of being nutritionally low in vitamins, minerals, and fibers. These foods contain high calories, fat, sugar, salt and preservatives.
  • There are many adversities to the body due to consuming junk foods such as weakening the body defense system, increasing blood sugar level, weight gain and also risk of cancer.
  • Unhealthy diets in India are one of the major factors behind lifestyle diseases.
  • According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, due to unhealthy diets there are around 11% people who have debates, 40% of them suffering from abdominal diseases and 35% facing hypersensitivity.
  • It is not surprising that India’s food processing industry is going to be bigger as it is predicted to be worth $535 billion by 2025-26.
  • The Supreme Court of India, Food Safety and Standard Authority of India, National Commission for Protection of Child rights issued advisory and decisions to combat the use of junk food but there is still so much that needs to be done.
  • First FSSAI needs to “define” and “identify” the junk food properly in a public domain. There is currently no clear definition of junk food.
  • “A warning label” containing high in saltSug, sugar, fat, calories etc, must be in the packages of junk foods.
  • India needs to develop policies for the subsidiaries of healthy foods such as millets, vegetables, fruits, whole food etc.
  • Behavioral change campaigns especially for children and young adults can play an important role.
