Iran captures two ships hours after Trump prolongs ceasefire

  • Iran has taken control of two ships in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. One of these ships is believed to have links with Israel, as stated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
  • This action happened just a few hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the ceasefire with Iran would continue for an unlimited time.
  • Iran clearly said that it will not remove restrictions in the Strait of Hormuz as long as it feels that the U.S. and Israel are breaking the ceasefire rules.
  • The IRGC Navy explained that the two ships — “MSC-FRANCESCA” (said to be connected with Israel) and “EPAMINODES” — were taken because they were working without proper permission and had disturbed navigation systems, creating danger for other ships.
  • According to Iran, both ships were captured and then taken towards the Iranian coast.
  • The IRGC Navy also said that keeping safety and control in the Strait of Hormuz is a “red line” and cannot be ignored under any situation.
  • Earlier on the same day, Donald Trump removed confusion about the ceasefire by saying it would continue until Iran gives a clear and united peace proposal.
  • However, he also made it clear that the U.S. will continue its blockade on Iranian ports even during the ceasefire.
  • Trump said that due to internal disagreements inside Iran’s leadership and after requests from Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the U.S. decided to temporarily stop attacks on Iran.
  • He added that this pause will continue only until Iran’s leaders come forward with a clear peace plan.
  • Iran has not yet confirmed whether it will also extend the ceasefire.
  • Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that a ceasefire is only meaningful if the U.S. removes its maritime blockade and Israel fully follows the agreement.
  • He argued that a ceasefire is not complete if global trade is affected and Israel continues aggressive actions, which he called “Zionist warmongering”.
  • Ghalibaf also said that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is not possible if ceasefire rules are clearly being broken.
  • He added that military pressure has failed in the past and will not succeed in the future, and the only solution is respecting Iran’s rights.
  • Reports from Tasnim News Agency say that Iran is still thinking and has not taken a final decision on extending the ceasefire.
  • The UK Maritime Trade Operations confirmed that two ships were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday.
  • On Tuesday, Trump had said that S. officials led by Vice-President J.D. Vance would hold talks with Iran in Islamabad.
  • He showed confidence that Iran would agree to a “good deal”, but also warned that if talks fail, the U.S. may take military action.
  • However, Iran later informed Islamabad that it will not attend these talks.
  • Iran said the reason was “too many demands” from the U.S. and the continued blockade of its ports.
  • Later, Trump officially announced the extension of the ceasefire, but repeated that the U.S. military will keep enforcing the blockade and stay ready for action if needed.
  • He ended by saying that the ceasefire will continue until Iran gives its proposal and talks are completed, no matter what the result is.

Voting underway for all 234 seats in Tamil Nadu; Phase 1 polling begins in Bengal

  • Voting is taking place on Thursday for all 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu and 152 out of 294 seats in West Bengal (first phase).
  • In Tamil Nadu, more than 73 crore voters can vote, and 75,064 polling stations have been set up across 33,133 locations.
  • Elections are being conducted using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), including 06 lakh ballot units, 75,064 control units, and 75,064 VVPAT machines.
  • Every polling station will have two cameras, and the entire voting process will be live-streamed (webcast) for monitoring.
  • Authorities said that social media, TV channels, and influencer accounts will be closely watched during the elections.
  • In Tamil Nadu, the main political fight is between alliances led by DMK and AIADMK, while smaller parties like Naam Tamilar Katchi and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam are also trying to gain support.
  • In West Bengal, more than 2,400 companies of central armed police forces have been deployed to ensure free and fair elections.
  • Around 60 crore voters will vote in this phase across 44,378 polling stations.
  • A total of 59,777 ballot units, 59,980 control units, and 64,466 VVPAT machines will be used.
  • These elections are happening after a special revision of voter lists, which reduced voters in West Bengal by about 12%, and around 68 lakh voters were removed in Tamil Nadu.
  • The remaining 142 seats in West Bengal will vote on April 29, and vote counting for all phases will take place on May 4.

Centre mandates registration for e-sports

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced new rules that allow registration of e-sports games and companies, starting from May 1.
  • These rules come under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which had earlier banned real money gaming in India.
  • The rules were finalized after a draft was shared with the public in October last year for feedback.
  • A new body called the Online Gaming Authority of India (OGAI) has been created, which will work under MeitY as a fully digital office.
  • The OGAI will include members from the Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Law, making it a multi-ministry body.
  • According to the rules, “online social games” will not always need registration, only when the Central government specifically asks for it.
  • But for e-sports games, registration has been made compulsory.
  • IT Secretary Krishnan said that the rules allow the government to regulate video games in the future, including adding age restrictions if needed to deal with issues like gaming addiction.
  • The rules also allow the government to introduce a “code of practice”, which may include rules about features like in-game purchases (microtransactions).
  • He clarified that most games that do not involve real money can continue without mandatory registration, and joining such processes will be optional.
  • Speaking about betting websites (especially those involving Indian elections and cricket matches), he said that such platforms are blocked whenever found.
  • He also mentioned that using VPNs makes regulation difficult, because VPNs are used for both legal and illegal purposes.
  • He compared this problem to a “whack-a-mole situation”, meaning that solving one issue often leads to another popping up somewhere else.
  • The final Act does not include earlier ideas about promoting e-sports, because such promotion is seen as a policy decision, not something to be included in rules.
