Eleven individuals from the contact list of the deceased Kerala boy have tested negative for Nipah virus

Health authorities in the state breathe a sigh of relief as those who tested negative include the boy’s parents and two hospital staff members. The list of contacts with the victim has increased to 406, with 194 classified as high-risk, according to State Health Minister Veena George.

  • On Monday, health authorities in Kerala felt a sense of relief as the serum samples of eleven individuals from the contact list of a 15-year-old boy from Pandikkad, who had died from Nipah virus, tested negative at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode on Sunday.
  • Health Minister Veena George announced in the evening that those who tested negative for Nipah included the boy’s parents, two hospital employees from Palakkad, and two others from Thiruvananthapuram. Nine samples were sent to the virology laboratory at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode, and four samples to the Institute of Advanced Virology in Thonnakkal, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • The contact list for the Nipah victim now includes 406 individuals. Health officials used various methods, including surveillance camera footage, to identify those who had direct or indirect contact with the boy between July 10 and 19.
  • Among these contacts, 194 are classified as high risk, with 139 of them being health workers, according to Ms. George.
  • She mentioned that 15 people on the contact list have been admitted to various hospitals and are receiving treatment. “Those who tested negative and have recovered from fever and other symptoms will be discharged but must remain in isolation according to protocol,” the Minister stated.
  • The contact list comprises four individuals from Thiruvananthapuram and two from Palakkad. The samples tested at the Thonnakkal lab were from those in quarantine in Thiruvananthapuram.
  • The Minister mentioned that the boy who died from Nipah had reportedly consumed a hog plum (ambazhanga) from an area infested with bats. “Initial investigations indicate that this might be the source of the infection,” she said. However, she noted that further investigations are required to confirm the source.

Teenager survives infection by ‘brain-eating’ amoeba

  • A 14-year-old boy from Kozhikode, Kerala, has recovered from primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM).
  • Health Department sources noted that such recoveries are rare, as very few people globally have survived the infection. Afnan Jasim, who was treated at Baby Memorial Hospital in Kozhikode starting July 1, was discharged on Monday.
  • Abdul Rauf, consultant pediatric intensivist at BMH, informed The Hindu that Jasim showed symptoms of the infection on June 30. “We managed to make a preliminary diagnosis within 24 hours of his admission, which was crucial for his treatment. A PCR test later confirmed the presence of the amoeba,” said Dr. Rauf.
  • The hospital adhered to the treatment protocol recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States.
  • Official sources stated that Health Minister Veena George convened a meeting when the first PAM case was reported in the state this year and issued treatment guidelines. The staff at the primary health center in Meladi, where Jasim was initially taken on July 1, suspected PAM. Jasim was transferred to BMH after developing seizures.
  • PAM is caused by Naegleria fowleri, an amoeba found in warm freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers. Because it can infect the brain and destroy tissue, it is often called the ‘brain-eating amoeba’.
  • Rauf stated that globally, only eight PCR-confirmed patients have recovered from the disease, with Jasim being the first case in the country. Jasim was given medication for eight days before his PCR test showed a negative result for the amoeba.
  • Rauf noted that Jasim was under treatment for 21 days and will need to continue taking medication for at least one more week.

170 villages of Koya and Konda Reddi in the Godavari Valley have been affected, leading to the evacuation of 960 tribals

  • By Monday, over 170 villages in the four mandals of Chintoor Agency in the Alluri Sitharama Raju district of Andhra Pradesh had been affected by the Godavari flood.
  • The majority of the affected villages are populated by the Koya and Konda Reddi tribes in Chintoor, V.R. Puram, Kunavaram, and Yetapaka mandals, situated along the banks of the Sabari and Godavari rivers.
  • Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA-Chintoor) Project Officer Kavuri Chaitanya reported that 960 people have been evacuated. Most of the Konda Reddi tribals have been relocated to relief camps situated on hilltops.
  • ASR Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar instructed officials to accelerate efforts to relocate the affected tribals along the Sabari River to the relief camps.
  • By Monday, a second flood warning for the Godavari was in effect at Bhadrachalam, raising the risk of submergence for tribes across the Godavari Valley due to the backwaters from the Polavaram irrigation project.
  • A total of 149 relief camps have been prepared for the affected people across the five mandals in the Chintoor Agency.
  • Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar reported that 226 pregnant women have been admitted to nearby government hospitals. Additionally, ITDA officials have arranged for the distribution of 1,132 metric tonnes of rice.
