Fuel prices increased for the third time in eight days
- Petrol and diesel prices were increased for the third time in just eight days on Saturday. This time, the average increase was around 90 paise per litre for all types of fuel.
- The price of compressed natural gas (CNG) was also increased for the third time during the same period in many parts of North India. The latest increase was ₹1 per kg.
- Since the first price hike on May 15, petrol and diesel prices across the country have gone up by nearly ₹4.8 per litre in three separate increases.
- During the same period, CNG prices in many North Indian cities have increased by a total of ₹4 per kg.
- After the latest increase, petrol in Delhi became costlier by 87 paise and reached ₹99.51 per litre, while diesel prices went up by 91 paise to ₹92.49 per litre.
- In Delhi, the price of CNG has now reached ₹81.09 per kg.
- The repeated rise in fuel prices happened because oil companies are under pressure due to rising global crude oil prices. Energy supplies have also been affected because of the conflict in West Asia.
- India’s crude oil basket averaged $107.96 per barrel in May till Friday.
- Benchmark Brent crude futures for July delivery closed about 69% higher at $104.25 per barrel on Friday.
- Among the metro cities, Kolkata saw a bigger increase in fuel prices on Saturday compared to other cities.
- In Kolkata, petrol prices increased by 94 paise to ₹110.64 per litre, while diesel became costlier by 95 paise and reached ₹97.02 per litre.
- In Mumbai, petrol prices increased by 90 paise to ₹108.49 per litre, while diesel prices rose by 94 paise to ₹95.02 per litre.

- After the latest ₹1 per kg increase in CNG prices, people in Ghaziabad and Noida now have to pay ₹89.70 per kg for CNG.
- In Meerut, the price of CNG has increased to ₹89.58 per kg.
- Indraprastha Gas Limited said the increase in CNG prices was done only to partly balance the higher cost of gas and the strong rise in the value of the U.S. dollar.
Marco Rubio Says India Plays Key Role in U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy
- S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that India plays a very important role in America’s Indo-Pacific strategy. During his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he also invited him to visit Washington later this year.
- Rubio started his four-day India visit on Saturday morning. During this visit, he is expected to hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Sunday and also attend the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with ministers from Australia and Japan on Tuesday.
- Rubio said one of the main reasons for his India visit was to “renew” Quad cooperation.
- He also praised both Prime Minister Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump for strengthening India-U.S. relations.
- According to a statement released by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Mr. Rubio informed Prime Minister Modi about the steady progress in cooperation between India and the United States in many important sectors.
- These sectors include defence, strategic technology, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity, education, and people-to-people relations.
- The two leaders are expected to meet again in June during their visit to Evian in France for the G-7 summit, where India has been invited for the outreach summit.
- Prime Minister Modi, who had already visited the Trump White House in February 2025, is also expected to visit the United States again for the G-20 summit at Mar-a-Lago in December this year.
- S. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that Mr. Rubio officially invited Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House on behalf of President Trump.
- He also said that the two leaders discussed the Iran conflict.
- Pigott stated that the United States would not allow Iran to control or disturb the global energy market.
- He also said that American energy products could help India reduce dependence on other energy sources and improve energy security.
- The PIB statement said that Prime Minister Modi repeated India’s support for peace efforts and once again stressed that conflicts should be solved peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy.
- This will be the third meeting of the Quad Foreign Ministers since President Trump returned to power.
- Earlier meetings were already held in January and July 2025.
- Despite many discussions, the Quad countries have still not finalised a date for the Quad Summit, which India has been expected to host for the last two years.
- The delay in the Quad Summit is partly because of tensions between India and the United States over tariffs, sanctions, visa restrictions, and America’s claim that it helped mediate the India-Pakistan ceasefire in 2025.
- India has denied that claim.
- Rubio said that the first official meeting he attended as Secretary of State was a Quad meeting, and he stressed that the United States wants to renew and strengthen the grouping.
- Speaking during the inauguration of the new “Support Annexe Building” at the U.S. Embassy, Mr. Rubio described the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in India as a clear sign of India’s importance in America’s Indo-Pacific policy and regional strategy.
- Rubio also announced that the United States will soon start a priority visa service for Indians travelling for business and investment purposes.
- He said that the new Support Annexe Building would house several consular and visa offices.
- However, this announcement came at a time when the United States had introduced new restrictions on H1-B visas and new rules requiring Green Card applicants to leave the U.S. and complete their process from their home countries.
- These new visa and residency rules are expected to create serious problems for Indian professionals working in the United States.
- On Saturday evening, Mr. Rubio attended a reception organised in his honour by Mr. Gor.
- The event was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, and Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
U.S. government says Green Card applicants must apply from their home countries
- The Trump administration announced on Friday that foreigners living in the United States who want a Green Card will now have to leave the country and apply from their home country.
- This decision is a major change to a policy that had been followed for more than 50 years.
- The announcement created confusion and concern among immigration lawyers, aid organisations, and immigrants.
- Earlier, foreign nationals who were legally staying in the United States could complete the full Green Card process without leaving the country.
- This included people married to U.S. citizens, holders of student visas and work visas, refugees, and political asylum seekers.
- According to the announcement made by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), foreigners staying temporarily in the U.S. and wishing to become permanent residents must now return to their home country and apply from there.
- The only exception will be in “extraordinary circumstances,” and USCIS officers will decide who qualifies under those conditions.
- USCIS said that non-immigrants such as students, temporary workers, and tourists come to the U.S. for a limited time and for a specific purpose.
- The agency said that the immigration system is designed in such a way that these people are expected to leave the country once their temporary stay is over.
- USCIS also said that temporary visits should not become the first step toward getting permanent residency or citizenship.
- Doug Rand, who worked as a senior adviser at USCIS during the Biden administration, said the main purpose of this policy is very clear.
- He said senior officials in the Trump administration have repeatedly stated that they want fewer people to receive permanent residency in the United States.
- He added that permanent residency later becomes a path to citizenship, and according to him, the administration wants to block that path for as many people as possible.
- USCIS did not mention when the new rule would officially start.
- The agency also did not clearly explain whether applicants would have to stay outside the United States during the entire Green Card process.
- It is also not clear whether the new policy will affect people whose Green Card applications are already being processed.
- The new changes are part of several steps already taken by the administration to tighten immigration rules and restrict entry for people from many countries.
- USCIS described the policy change as an attempt to restore “the original intent of the law” and close what it called a “loophole.”
