DRDO Successfully Completes First Trials of Indigenous Integrated Air Defence System

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on Saturday afternoon around 12:30 p.m. successfully completed the first flight trials of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the Odisha coast. The tests showed that the system is fully operational and ready for use in battle.
  • The IADWS is a multi-layered defence system that brings together three key indigenous weapons – the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM), the Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS), and a high-energy laser weapon known as the Directed Energy Weapon.
  • All these weapons work together through a Centralised Command and Control Centre, which was also developed by DRDO. This centre is like the brain of the system, controlling and coordinating all operations.
  • During the trial, three targets were attacked at the same time – two high-speed unmanned planes and one multi-copter drone. The missiles and laser weapons hit and destroyed all three, showing the system’s quick response.
  • The QRSAM, VSHORADS, and the laser weapon destroyed the targets at different distances and heights, proving that IADWS can handle all kinds of enemy aircraft and drones.
  • Every part of the system – including missiles, radars, communication, drone detection, and the central control – worked smoothly. The results were confirmed by the monitoring equipment at Chandipur Test Range.
  • The test was watched closely by senior DRDO scientists and officers from the armed forces, who confirmed the excellent performance of the system.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised DRDO, the armed forces, and the industry partners. He said the success of IADWS shows that India now has a strong multi-layered defence to protect itself from enemy air attacks.
  • He also said that these trials will help protect important national buildings and areas by giving stronger defence against enemy aircraft, drones, and other aerial threats.
  • DRDO Chairman and Defence R&D Secretary Dr. Samir V. Kamat also congratulated the teams, saying their hard work made this achievement possible.

ISRO Conducts Air-Drop Test for Gaganyaan Mission

  • On Sunday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully carried out the first Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT-1). This test is an important step in preparing for India’s first human space mission, the Gaganyaan programme.
  • ISRO shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the test was done to fully check the parachute-based slowdown system, which will be very important for safely bringing back astronauts.
  • The IADT is a special trial that checks if the parachutes work properly in real-life conditions, to make sure the crew capsule can land safely.
  • For this test, a dummy crew capsule weighing about five tonnes was carried up by a Chinook helicopter and then dropped. The parachutes opened step by step as the capsule came down, reducing its speed until it safely splashed into water.
  • In real astronaut flights, the parachutes will open only after re-entry into the atmosphere, once heat shields and small drogue parachutes have slowed down the speed. This step is very important for the safe landing of astronauts.
  • The beginning of the flight, the re-entry, and the water landing are the riskiest parts of the Gaganyaan mission. That is why perfect parachute performance is critical.
  • The test was done with the combined effort of the Indian Air Force, DRDO, Navy, and Coast Guard, showing strong teamwork for astronaut safety.
  • Officials said this test is an important move towards proving that India’s systems for launch, landing, and recovery are safe for humans.
  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh told the Lok Sabha that many parts of the Gaganyaan programme, such as the propulsion systems for the crew and service modules, have already been developed and tested.
  • He also mentioned that models of the environmental control and life support system (which keep astronauts safe inside the capsule) have been built. The crew escape system, with five different motor types, has also been successfully tested.
  • Infrastructure such as the orbital module preparation facility, the Gaganyaan Control Centre, astronaut training centre, and upgrades to the second launch pad are ready as well.
  • The minister added that several trial missions, including important test vehicle flights, are already being carried out, marking good progress towards India’s first manned space mission.

Ongoing Search for 32 Missing in Chishoti Flash Floods

  • Search efforts are still going on to find 32 missing people after heavy rains caused flash floods in Chishoti village of Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir. The disaster left the area badly damaged.
  • On Sunday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reviewed the situation through videoconferencing from Jammu, as the weather did not allow him to travel to the flood-hit areas.
  • He went to the Government Medical College (GMC) hospital in Jammu to meet the injured people from the floods and prayed for their recovery.
  • Singh said he was pleased with the fast and well-coordinated efforts of the state administration, Army, NDRF, SDRF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police in handling the situation.
  • He also assured that the Central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is fully committed to giving relief and rehabilitation to the affected people.
  • Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister Jitendra Singh accompanied the Defence Minister during his hospital visit to show support to the injured victims.
  • LG Manoj Sinha said that if the weather got better, the Defence Minister would visit Chishoti village; otherwise, he would meet the victims in Jammu itself.
  • The heavy rains hit Chishoti village on August 14, killing 65 people, injuring more than 100, while 32 are still missing. Search and rescue operations are continuing.
  • At present, 16 injured victims are being treated at GMC hospital, and doctors say they are in stable condition. The Lieutenant Governor expressed hope that they will recover soon.
  • Sinha also said that ₹4.13 crore has already been spent on relief and rehabilitation work for the victims of the flood.
