‘Vocabulary’
- Collude (verb)
Meaning: cooperate in a secret or unlawful way in order to deceive or gain an advantage over others (सांठगांठ)
Synonyms: combine, conspire, collaborate
Antonyms: differ, disagree, split
Sentence: He accused his opponents of colluding with one another.
- Retrospective (adj.)
Meaning: looking back on or dealing with past events or situations. (पूर्वप्रभावी)
Synonyms: backdated, retroactive, backward-looking
Antonyms: silly, thoughtless
Sentence: our survey was retrospective.
- Precept (noun)
Meaning: a general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought. (नियम)
Synonyms: principle, rule, tenet
Sentence: You won’t find this moral precept in the scriptures.
- Adamant (adj.)
Meaning: refusing to be persuaded or to change one’s mind. (हठी)
Synonyms: adamantine, bullheaded, inconvincible
Antonyms: acquiescent, agreeable, flexible
Sentence: He is adamant that he is not going to resign.
- Onerous (adj.)
Meaning: (of a task, duty, or responsibility) involving an amount of effort and difficulty that is oppressively burdensome. (कष्टदायक)
Synonyms: burdensome, inconvenient, troublesome
Antonyms: comfortable, cozy, easy
Sentence: This is the most onerous task I have ever undertaken.
- Reciprocity (noun)
Meaning: the practice of exchanging things with others for mutual benefit, especially privileges granted by one country or organization to another. (आदान-प्रदान करना)
Synonyms: collaboration, mutualism, harmony
Antonyms: antagonism, antipathy, enmity
Sentence: The proposal calls for reciprocity in trade relations.
- Corroborating (verb)
Meaning: confirm or give support to (a statement, theory, or finding). (की पुष्टि)
Synonyms: confirm, verify, endorse
Antonyms: confuting, disproving, refuting
Sentence: Recent research seems to corroborate his theory.
- Gratuitous (adj.)
Meaning: uncalled for; lacking good reason; unwarranted. (ऐच्छिक)
Synonyms: unjustified, without reason, uncalled for
Antonyms: essential, indispensable, necessary
Sentence: There’s too much crime and gratuitous violence on TV.
- Immaculate (adj.)
Meaning: (especially of a person or their clothes) perfectly clean, neat, or tidy. (निर्मल)
Synonyms: clean, spotless, pristine
Antonyms: coarse, dirty, filthy
Sentence: The property is in immaculate condition.
- Pithily (adv.)
Meaning: in a few words (मतलब की बात)
Synonyms: briefly, compactly, concisely
Antonyms: diffusely, long-windedly, verbosely
Sentence: The observation that “War is hell” is how General Sherman pithily summed up his experiences in combat.
