• ICMR has started an initiative to provide easy non-invasive testing to tackle anemia disease, especially focusing on pregnant women and school going children.
• Despite the government’s effort to tackle anemia such as Anaemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) Programme, anemia is still the major concern of public health.
• ICMR invited various companies, organizations and Startup manufacturing companies to produce non invasive hemoglobin meters to provide effective testing of anemia.
• ICMR also noted that one of the key strategic interventions of AMB( Anaemia Mukt Bharat Programme) is to use digital equipment and methods to establish point of care especially focusing on pregnant women and school going children.
• The non-invasive hemoglobinometer testing is easy and effective, requires easy procedure and furthermore it will be acceptable by all needed people such as children and pregnant ladies.
• If we take a glance at the past few years,many non invasive hemoglobin meters manufactured by several make in India startups have been available in the market.
• However these devices need to be experimented first to prove accuracy and precision of non-invasive easy point of care method before they will be used in this initiative by ICMR.
• As per the National Family Health Survey 2019-21, the number of anemia patients among men(15-49 years) was 25%, among women aged 15 to 49 years 57%, in adolescent boys and girls aged 15 to 19 years was 31.1% and 59.1% respectively, 52.2% among pregnant women and 67.1% in children.
• Research for the detection and proper mitigation of anemia is the top priority of ICMR.
• ICMR further stated that it would start a hospital based clinical study to test the validity of these devices.
• ICMR will also provide full technical support to this Programme by providing a team of experienced scientists to study, planning ,data analysis, validation, development, product improvement and other needed help.
• ICMR would also collaborate with other organizations, institutions and Startups to establish research and implement the Programme.
