  • Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, Olympic hockey player P.R. Sreejesh, actor Anant Nag, Assam folk artist Jatin Goswami, and Vinod Dham, the “Father of the Pentium Chip,” are among the Padma Bhushan awardees.
  • Sadhvi Rithambhara, associated with the Babri Masjid demolition, has also been named for the Padma Bhushan.

93 Gallantry Awards Announced: 2 Kirti Chakras and 14 Shaurya Chakras

  • President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, approved two Kirti Chakras, including one posthumously, and 14 Shaurya Chakras, three of which are posthumous, among a total of 93 gallantry awards to armed forces and CAPF personnel on the eve of the 76th Republic Day.
  • Of the 93 awards, 11 are posthumous, including 67 Sena Medals, seven posthumous; two Nao Sena Medals; and eight Vayu Sena Medals.
  • Major Manjit Kumar of the Punjab Regiment and Naik Dilwar Khan of the Artillery Regiment were awarded the Kirti Chakra for counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, with Naik Dilwar Khan receiving it posthumously.
  • A total of 305 defence decorations were also approved, including 30 Param Vishisht Seva Medals, 57 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals, and 136 Vishisht Seva Medals, along with other medals for devotion to duty.
  • The President approved 58 Mentioned-in-Despatches, including four posthumous awards, for personnel from the Army and Air Force.
  • Mentioned-in-Despatches included 55 for Indian Army personnel for operations such as Rakshak, Snow Leopard, Hifazat, and others, and three for Indian Air Force personnel for Operation Sankalp.
  • Eight Coast Guard personnel were awarded the President’s Tatrakshak Medal and Tatrakshak Medal.
  • Major Manjit Kumar, on April 25, 2024, tracked two foreign terrorists in Sopore district using human intelligence and established a cordon, enduring retaliatory attacks through the night.
  • On April 26, 2024, Major Manjit eliminated a terrorist in a fierce firefight while rescuing a civilian and two children, demonstrating gallantry and leadership, earning him the Kirti Chakra.
  • Naik Dilwar Khan participated in an ambush in Kupwara district’s Lolab Valley on July 23, 2024, encountering terrorists in close combat.
  • Despite heavy fire and being gravely injured, Naik Dilwar Khan engaged a terrorist in hand-to-hand combat, killing him at point-blank range before succumbing to his injuries.

M.P. Liquor Ban: Officials Allow Alcohol to Be Brought from Outside

  • Despite a ban on alcohol sales at 19 locations in Madhya Pradesh from April 1, individuals can still bring liquor from outside and consume it privately.
  • The ban involves the closure of 47 composite liquor shops, which sell both Indian Made Foreign Liquor and country liquor, including those in 17 religious towns.
  • Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced the decision after the Cabinet approved the proposal.
  • Consumption of liquor by individuals alone will not be penalized, as confirmed by Excise Department officials.
  • Officials clarified that prohibiting possession and consumption would require a law similar to the Bihar Prohibition Act, 2016, which Madhya Pradesh lacks.
  • The ban mainly targets sales and group drinking in bars but allows private possession and individual consumption.
  • Madhya Pradesh has around 3,600 composite liquor shops generating an estimated annual revenue of ₹15,200 crore.
  • The closure of 47 outlets is expected to result in a revenue loss of ₹450 crore for the State.
  • To offset this loss, the Cabinet decided to increase liquor outlet license fees by 20% in the next financial year; affected locations include Ujjain and Chitrakoot.
