• During the ninth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body on 18th March 2024, the final part of the negotiations on this Pandemic treaty was finalized.
• In May 2024, the final draft of the World Health Organization Pandemic Agreement will be presented to get approval in the World Health Assembly.
• One of the main objectives of this treaty is to address the failure and impacts of COVID 19 pandemic and strengthen the global defenses.
• It will also foster pandemic prevention, preparedness,and response.
• The negotiation draft of the pandemic treaty contained major issues such as healthcare workforce capacity, supply chain, logistic, Surveillance of pathogen, technical support to the production of Vaccines, treatments and diagnosis test and also the waivers of intellectual property rights.
• One of the concerns about this treaty is to share information related to pathogens and their generic codes. Some developing countries are not comfortable sharing information and data.
• For the solution of above mentioned concern, there is a mechanism in the Draft named WHO pathogen access and benefit sharing (PABS) system.
• This Pandemic Agreement has significant importance because it will rebuild trust and coordination between nations.
