EC pushes SIR deadline to Dec. 11 after BLO concerns

  • The Election Commission has given one more week for the special revision of the voter list because many booth-level officers were under a lot of stress. So, the work that was earlier supposed to end on December 4 will now finish on December 11.
  • Because of this extra time, the draft voter list will now come out on December 16 instead of December 9, and the final corrected list will be ready on February 14 instead of February 7.
  • In this second stage of the revision, the aim is to cover about 51 crore voters from nine States and three Union Territories. These include Gujarat, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep.
  • Most of these States last did this type of special revision between 2002 and 2004, and since then they have almost completed matching present voters with earlier special revision records.
  • The Election Commission said that 99.65% of the forms meant for checking voter details have already been given to people, and 84.30% of the forms that came back have been entered into the digital system.
  • Uttar Pradesh has the slowest digitisation at 69.56%, while West Bengal, even though the Trinamool Congress has complained about pressure on BLOs, has managed to digitise 95.24% of the forms it received.
  • Opposition parties criticised the strict deadlines, saying this pressure has even led to some BLOs dying. They plan to raise this issue strongly in the Winter Session of Parliament.
  • The Election Commission explained that the one-week extension will help BLOs share details of voters who have shifted, are absent, have died, or have duplicate names, with the booth-level agents of political parties before the draft lists are released.
  • The States involved in this phase—Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, and Puducherry—are set to have Assembly elections in 2026. Assam will also vote in 2026, but it is going through its own special revision.
  • The first stage of this special revision was done earlier in Bihar, which led to more than 68 lakh names being removed from its voter lists just before its State election this month.

Cyclone Ditwah weakens; heavy rains claim three lives and damage crops in Tamil Nadu

  • Cyclone Ditwah became weaker on Sunday while moving slowly northward over the Bay of Bengal, close to the northern parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It brought heavy rain that led to three deaths in different districts.
  • Two people died when walls fell in Thanjavur and Thoothukudi, and one person died after electrocution in Mayiladuthurai as the nonstop rain made conditions unsafe in many places.
  • More than 2,300 people were moved to relief camps by Sunday morning. Officials also said that 230 huts were damaged and nearly 56,000 hectares of crops were underwater because of the continuous heavy rain.
  • The cyclone’s centre stayed about 80 km away from the coast and moved slowly at 5 km per hour. By night, it weakened into a deep depression and was expected to come within 30 km of land.
  • Weather reports said that light to moderate rain would continue in some parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry-Karaikal on Monday. Thunderstorms and lightning may also occur, and heavy rain is expected especially in Tiruvallur district.
  • Wind speeds, which were strong earlier, were expected to slowly reduce to 45–55 km per hour, with gusts up to 65 km per hour by Monday morning. Sea conditions would also slowly get better.
  • Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said that around 56,000 hectares of crops were submerged—24,000 hectares in Nagapattinam, 15,000 in Tiruvarur, and 8,000 in Mayiladuthurai.
  • Officials will study the exact damage once the water goes down. After that, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will decide the compensation amount, which can be given only if the crop loss is above 33%.
  • The Air Force flew about 300 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) workers from Maharashtra and Gujarat to Chennai in a C-17 aircraft, along with nearly 35 tonnes of disaster-relief equipment.
  • With ten more NDRF teams reaching Tamil Nadu, there are now thirty-eight teams ready across the State to be sent wherever needed depending on the seriousness of the situation.
  • Around 230 huts were damaged, and more than 2,300 people were sheltered in 38 relief camps across nine districts, including Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Villupuram, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Chengalpattu, and Ranipet.
  • The State government worked with other agencies to bring back people from Tamil Nadu who were stuck in Sri Lanka because of the cyclone. They were expected to return on Sunday.

Software upgrade on A320 family aircraft completed

  • The DGCA announced that Indian airlines have completed the software update for the working Elevator Aileron Computer on 323 Airbus A320 family aircraft to fix a possible flight-control issue.
  • Earlier, Airbus had warned that strong solar radiation could corrupt important flight-control data in many A320 aircraft, and fixing this problem through software updates might cause some delays in airline services.
  • At first, 338 A320 family aircraft belonging to IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express were marked for the software update meant to fix this possible flight-control weakness.
  • Out of these, 323 aircraft were in daily service and six were in base maintenance, while nine Air India aircraft were found to not need the software update.
  • IndiGo completed the updates on all 200 of its A320 aircraft that were in operation, ensuring every affected plane met the safety rules set by the DGCA.
  • Air India had 113 affected aircraft, out of which it updated 100 that were in use. Four were still in base maintenance, and nine did not require the changes after inspections.
  • Air India Express completed the update on 23 A320 aircraft, while two more were still in maintenance for redelivery, completing its part in the overall safety work.
