All States to Gain from Proposed Delimitation: PM

  • Narendra Modi said during an election rally in Kerala that States which have controlled their population will not lose their Lok Sabha seats. He also said that every State will benefit when the number of seats in Parliament is increased.
  • The Central government is planning to change the Constitution and related laws to redraw the election boundaries. Under this plan, the number of seats in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies may increase by about 50%, and one-third of all seats will be reserved for women, before the 2029 general elections.
  • Parliament’s Budget Session will restart on April 16 for three days to discuss and debate these changes.
  • Modi spoke on this issue because many people, especially in South India, were worried that States with lower population growth might lose their seats after delimitation.
  • He praised States like Kerala and Tamil Nadu for doing a great job in controlling population growth, and said that false information is being spread claiming their seats will be reduced.
  • He assured that the government will give a clear guarantee in Parliament and will also make it a law.
  • He clearly said that no State — including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, and Telangana — will lose Lok Sabha seats.
  • However, he did not clearly explain whether this means the total number of seats will stay the same for each State or just their share compared to other States.
  • Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, where he gave the speech, has the lowest Total Fertility Rate in India (1.3).
  • In the 2008 delimitation, this district saw its Assembly seats reduced from 8 to 5.
  • As per current laws, a new delimitation must happen after the Census conducted after 2026, where States can gain or lose seats based on their population.
  • The government now wants to change these laws and start the delimitation process earlier, so it can be completed before the 2029 elections.
  • The government has told political parties that the share of seats for each State, which is based on the 1971 Census, will not change.
  • Modi also said that his government has provided 33% reservation for women in both the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies.
  • He explained that instead of ending the Budget Session, it has been extended to April 16, 17, and 18 with two main goals:
  • To give a legal guarantee that States will not lose seats
  • To ensure women’s reservation seats are added as extra seats, increasing the total number
  • He added that this increase in seats will benefit South Indian States greatly, and special Parliament sittings have been called to pass these laws.

Donald Trump gives Iran a 48-hour deadline to strike a deal or face “hell”

  • Donald Trump said on Saturday that Iran has only 48 hours to agree to a deal, otherwise it will face serious consequences.
  • This warning came after a strike near an Iranian nuclear plant, which killed a guard and forced people to leave the area.
  • At the same time, Iran reported new attacks, and its military claimed it hit a commercial ship in Bahrain that was said to be linked to Israel.
  • Trump posted on Truth Social, referring to a warning he had given earlier on March 26, asking Iran to either make a deal or open the Strait of Hormuz.
  • He stressed the urgency by saying:
“Time is running out — 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them.”
  • Iran said on Friday that it had shot down a U.S. F-15 fighter jet.
  • S. media reported that one of the two pilots was rescued, but the other is still missing.
  • Iran’s military also claimed it shot down a U.S. A-10 aircraft in the Gulf.
  • According to U.S. reports, the pilot of the A-10 was safely rescued.
  • Abbas Araghchi warned that attacks on the Bushehr nuclear plant could cause radioactive leaks.
  • He said such a disaster could “end life in Gulf countries, not just Iran.”

Raghav Chadha, AAP clash over his removal as party’s Rajya Sabha deputy leader

  • The conflict between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Raghav Chadha continued, with Chadha calling the allegations against him false and planned.
  • AAP responded by saying that Chadha did not raise even one important issue related to Punjab in Parliament.
  • On Thursday, the party removed him from the post of Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha, after which both sides have been criticizing each other continuously.
  • In a video on X, Chadha said that the claim he did not join Opposition protests in Parliament is a “clear lie”, and he challenged the party to show proof.
  • He also denied refusing to sign an impeachment motion against the Chief Election Commissioner, saying no one from the party asked him to do so.
  • Chadha explained that he goes to Parliament to raise real issues and make an impact, not to shout, create chaos, or break microphones.
  • He said he raised many public issues such as:
  • GST and income tax
  • Punjab’s water problems
  • Delhi’s air pollution
  • Condition of government schools
  • Improving public healthcare
  • He asked people to check his Parliament record.
  • Responding to this, Harpal Singh Cheema said Chadha was elected by Punjab MLAs to strongly represent the State, but he failed to do so.
  • Cheema claimed Chadha did not raise any important Punjab issue in Parliament.
  • He also mentioned that even after the Prime Minister announced ₹1,600 crore flood relief for Punjab, the State has not received the money, and Chadha did not raise this issue.
  • According to Cheema, these matters were repeatedly told to Chadha, but he still did not act.
  • Aman Arora said Chadha should remember how Arvind Kejriwal and the party helped build his political career.
  • Aman Arora accused Chadha of ignoring serious Punjab issues like RDF funds and flood relief, and instead focusing on less relevant topics.
