- The outcomes of next bi-monthly meeting of the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), are scheduled to be released on 8th February 2024.
- It is expected that the interest rate will not be going to change and will maintain the status quo.
- If we talk about the last review of the Monetary Policy held in December, five members had voted for withdrawal of the accommodation
- In the last Monetary Policy meeting, the GDP was forecasted for this fiscal year at 7% from 6.5%.
- As it is expected to maintain the status quo of the benchmark interest rates, it would be interesting to see if the estimate of the GDP is revisited in the light of National Statistical Office projection about GDP which is at 7.3%.
- Last Week, the US Federal Reserve held the fourth straight Monetary review and the head was vague about the chance of the anticipated rate cuts this year.
- The bi monthly meeting of the Reserve Bank of India is not directly taking cue from the US Federal Reserve review but the concern on inflation remained the same.
- The target of 4% inflation rate by the RBI is still difficult to achieve as the inflation rate in the month of December was 5.7% which was the fourth month high.
- The RBI estimates that the inflation rate for this quarter average at 5.2% which is expected to cool around 4% in the period of July- September, providing an anticipation for the rate cuts if the monsoon in the country is normal.
- The interim budget however could give the central bank more room to ease the liquidity constraints, as it is not adding to inflation pressure.
