Aditya-L1 Mission and the new heights of ISRO

• On 6th January, by following the instructions of scientists and engineers of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) that have been translated through the computer, Aditya-L1 onboarded into orbit around an imaginary point in space near to the sun.
• Aditya-L1 reached its destination on 6th January around an imaginary L1 Lagrange point.
• From the L1 Lagrange point in space, Aditya-L1 will have an unrestrained view of the sun for the entire five years of its expected lifetime in space.
• There are a total of seven instruments with the help of these instruments Aditya-L1 will study the sun.
• These seven instruments include VELC, to study the uppermost layer of the sun’s atmosphere; SUIT, an ultraviolet imaging telescope; SoLEXS and HEL1OS, to study solar flares and coronal mass ejections; ASPEX and PAPA, to study the solar wind and plasma; and a set of digital magnetometers.
• The L1 Lagrange point is 1.5 million km away from the earth in the earth sun direction. It has been chosen by the ISRO due to its situation in space because the gravitational influences of two bodies work here in such a way that the smaller body will not experience a net gravitational force from the both of the sides.
• This is the main reason to onboard Aditya-L1 to L1 Lagrange point so that it can stay there with little fuel.
• The scientific Mission of Aditya-L1 spacecraft is going to begin in a month.
• There have also been some outstanding Missions before the Aditya-L1 such as Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, XPoSat mission and AstroSat.
• If we see a broader view of public perception about these achievements of ISRO there is something problematic.
• For example , people expect the Aditya-L1 spacecraft to capture high resolution photographs of the cosmos because they compare it to the James Webb Space Telescope operated by three space agencies.
• This is absolutely not a fair expectation because there are other instruments on Aditya-L1 which are not imagers and can do more observations.
• To address this ISRO should increase the Public outreach efforts by hosting open days and collaborating with institutions and scientists.
