- Yunus urged the youth to remain calm and prepare to contribute to the nation’s development. - On Wednesday, the Labour Appellate Tribunal overturned a six-month jail sentence previously imposed on him in a case concerning alleged labour law violations.
- The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the primary opposition during former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, held a rally that attracted thousands from across the country.
- Speaking virtually from London, Tarique Rahman, the acting chairperson of the BNP and son of former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, called for an immediate national election. He stated, “Power must be transferred to the elected representatives, and the national election must be held immediately.”
- BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the election should take place within the next three months.
- In her first public speech since 2018, Ms. Zia, who participated in the rally virtually, expressed gratitude to the people for their “fight and prayers” and emphasized the need for “love and peace” to rebuild the country, rather than “destruction and revenge.”
- She stated, “The youth are our future. We need to create a new democratic Bangladesh to fulfill their dreams, for which they have sacrificed so much.”
- The situation in the country has not yet returned to normal. Vandalism and looting continue in some areas, with security forces struggling to control the unrest. Ministry and department secretaries have stopped coming to the office, causing a near standstill in the functioning of the Bangladesh Secretariat.
- Many officials and employees associated with the Awami League have been missing. Several influential figures have gone into hiding, turned off their phones, and severed communication with their offices, leaving their subordinates without direction. This has caused a breakdown in the chain of command.
- The capital city, Dhaka, continued to experience demonstrations from various political groups.
- The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) voiced serious concerns on Wednesday about the worsening law and order situation in the country. MCCI President Kamran T. Rahman stated, “If this trend continues, it will greatly affect business, trade, and investment, and also create barriers to job creation.”
- Nationwide, business leaders have voiced concerns about the destructive activities currently targeting commercial and industrial establishments.
- President Mohammed Shahabuddin has called on the police to take a tougher stance in preventing looting and addressing the chaotic situation.
Vinesh’s Olympic aspirations derailed by an extra 100 grams
- Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s bid for glory in her third Olympics ended unexpectedly. Despite impressively defeating Japan’s World and Olympic champion Yui Susaki to reach the women’s 50-kg final, she was disqualified after weighing 100 grams over the allowed limit during the morning weigh-in before the final on Wednesday.
- Vinesh, a two-time World Wrestling Championships bronze medallist and key figure in the wrestlers’ protest against former WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, usually weighs around 57kg but dropped to 50kg for the Olympics.
- She initially met the weight limit on the first day of competition but had difficulty maintaining it before her final match against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the U.S.
- Despite efforts including a sauna visit, gym work, and a haircut to reduce weight, Vinesh’s weight was slightly over the limit on the morning of the match, according to her coach Virender Dahiya.
- Chef-de-mission Gagan Narang, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief P.T. Usha, and Dinshaw Pardiwala, head of India’s medical commission, were there to assist Vinesh.
- The WFI and the IOA contacted United World Wrestling, the global organization for the sport, but they couldn’t get any special permission.
- According to UWW’s Article 11 on weigh-ins, “Each morning of the competition, there is a weigh-in for each weight category. If an athlete misses the weigh-in or fails it (either the first or second time), they will be removed from the competition and placed last, with no official ranking.”
- UWW President Nenad Lalovic emphasized the importance of following the rules. He expressed sadness about what happened to her, saying, “She was slightly overweight, but rules are rules.”
- Italian athlete Emanuela Liuzzi had to give up her match on Tuesday because she exceeded the weight limit for her category.
- After Vinesh was eliminated, Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to Vinesh in the semifinals, was allowed to compete in the final. It has been reported that Vinesh, who was feeling weak due to a severe weight loss and received treatment at the Games Village clinic, is now doing well.
- Even though the country, trying to match its previous total of seven medals, didn’t win any this time, Vinesh should be proud of her performance. She performed impressively by defeating Yui in an impressive match and then overcoming Ukraine’s Oksana Livach and Yusnelis. Before her disqualification, she became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympics final.
A bridge linking Karwar in Karnataka to Goa, spanning the Kali River, has collapsed
- A bridge linking Karwar in Karnataka with Goa collapsed early Wednesday morning.
- A driver and his truck fell into the Kali River when the bridge collapsed. Fortunately, quick action by the police and local fishermen saved the driver’s life.
- Superintendent of Police Narayan M. from Uttara Kannada reported that a large section of the bridge collapsed at 1:50 a.m. At that time, an empty truck was crossing the bridge and fell into the river. The driver, Bala Murugan, 37, managed to escape from the truck and perched on a part of it that was above the water. Police officers on night patrol, along with local fishermen, rescued him.
- After the incident, traffic on the nearby new bridge was also halted.
- Mankal Vaidya, the Minister for Fisheries, visited the site and attributed the collapse to the Centre. He remarked that, despite numerous significant irregularities in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects, the Union government’s lack of response is astonishing.
- He stated that since national highway projects fall under the Union government’s jurisdiction, it controls the NHAI and the construction company IRB. Despite the company carrying out the work in an unscientific manner, no action has been taken against it.
- Vaidya said, “At Hattikeri in Ankola, where the bridge collapsed last year, a similar project was executed. Despite not assessing the strength of the old bridge, vehicular traffic was permitted. The blame for these incidents lies with IRB’s negligence.”
