 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Indolent (adj.)

Meaning: Not easily aroused to action or work. (अकर्मण्य)

Synonyms: lazy, idle, sleepy

Antonyms: industrious, ambitious, active

Sentence: An indolent boy who had to be forced to help out with the chores.

  1. Temperamental (adj.)

Meaning: Frequently influenced by moods and especially bad moods. (मनमौजी)

Synonyms: moody, unstable, impulsive

Antonyms: even, inflexible, immutable

Sentence: Preston is particularly good at handling temperamental people.

  1. Dainty (adj.)

Meaning: Satisfying or pleasing because of fineness or mildness. (सुन्दर)

Synonyms: exquisite, subtle, delicate

Antonyms: strong, ordinary, common

Sentence: A set of dainty teacups that would be perfect for an elderly lady.

  1. Oblivion (noun)

Meaning: A state of being disregardful or unconscious of one’s surroundings, concerns, or obligations. (विस्मृति)

Synonyms: ignorance, forgetfulness, unconsciousness

Antonyms: memory, recollection, consciousness

Sentence: For two weeks each year the stressed-out couple enjoy the blissful oblivion that comes with a vacation at the beach.

  1. Knack (noun)

Meaning: A clever often underhanded means to achieve an end. (कौशल)

Synonyms: trick, scheme, device

Sentence: Tried every knack I knew to get him to spill the beans.

  1. Endow (verb)

Meaning: To furnish freely or naturally with some power, quality, or attribute. (प्रदान करना)

Synonyms: provide, enhance, grant

Antonyms: exhaust, drain, dispossess

Sentence: Take my rest life over to endow you with a belief in goodness forever.

  1. Ponder (verb)

Meaning: To give serious and careful thought to. (विचार करें)

Synonyms: consider, contemplate, review

Antonyms: ignore, slight, overlook

Sentence: I’m pondering whether or not I should join another committee.

  1. Surcharge (verb)

Meaning: To charge (someone) too much for goods or services. (अधिभार)

Synonyms: mischarge, overcharge, gouge

Antonyms: undercharge, clam, discharge

Sentence: There is a surcharge for excess baggage.

  1. Scoff (verb)

Meaning: Speak to someone or about something in a scornfully derisive or mocking way. (उपहास करना)

Synonyms: sneer, smirk, glare

Antonyms: smile, laugh, grin

Sentence: You are pleased to scoff.

  1. Extant (adj.)

Meaning: Having being at present. (विद्यमान)

Synonyms: existing, existent, living

Antonyms: extinct, dead, destroyed

Sentence: Some of Washington’s letters are extant.
