The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  10th June 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Boggle (verb)

Meaning: (of a person or a person’s mind) be astonished or overwhelmed when trying to imagine something. (आश्चर्यचकित हो)

Synonyms: marvel, wonder, be astonished

Sentence: The sheer amount of data makes the mind boggle.

  1. Gainsay (verb)

Meaning: deny or contradict (a fact or statement). (विरोध करना)

Synonyms: deny, dispute, disagree with

Antonyms: admit, allow, avow

Sentence: No one dared to gainsay him.

  1. Whiff (noun)

Meaning: an almost imperceptible sign of something (एहसास)

Synonyms: flicker, glimmer, hint

Antonyms: permeation, pervasion, saturation

Sentence: Even a whiff of appreciation for everything I’ve done for her would have been nice.

  1. Scuffling (verb)

Meaning: engage in a short, confused fight or struggle at close quarters. (हाथापाई करना)

Synonyms: fight, struggle, tussle

Sentence: The teacher noticed two students scuffling in the corridor.

  1. Nocuous (adj.)

Meaning: noxious, harmful, or poisonous. (हानिकारक)

Synonyms: baleful, baneful, deleterious

Antonyms: anodyne, benign, harmless

Sentence: Hand washing is one of the easiest ways to help prevent the spread of nocuous germs.

  1. Beset (verb)

Meaning: be covered or studded with (घेर लेना)

Synonyms: attack, harass, bother

Antonyms: defend, cover, protect

Sentence: Our troops were beset by enemy fire.

  1. Recrimination (noun)

Meaning: an accusation in response to one from someone else. (अभियोग)

Synonyms: incrimination, charge, complaint

Sentence: Let’s not indulge in recrimination.

  1. Bluster (noun)

Meaning: talk in a loud, aggressive, or indignant way with little effect. (धमकी)

Synonyms: rant, thunder, boast

Antonyms: quiet, silence, calm

Sentence: I knew that it was all bluster and he wasn’t really angry with me.

  1. Repose (noun)

Meaning: a state of rest, sleep, or tranquility. (विश्राम)

Synonyms: rest, relaxation, inactivity

Antonyms: exertion, labor, toil

Sentence: The doctor ordered a period of repose for the patient recovering from pneumonia.

  1. Desist (verb)

Meaning: cease; abstain. (बंद कर देना)

Synonyms: abstain, refrain, forbear

Antonyms: actualize, appear, start

Sentence: The shopping center agreed to desist from false advertising.
