The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  11th January 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Gingerly (adv.)

Meaning: in a careful or cautious manner. (सावधानी से)

Synonyms: cautiously, carefully, circumspectly

Antonyms: careless, heedless, unmindful

Sentence: He opened the box gingerly and looked inside.

  1. Sham (noun)

Meaning: a thing that is not what it is purported to be. (दिखावा)

Synonyms: pretense, fake, act

Antonyms: real, genuine, authentic

Sentence: The latest crime figures are a complete sham.

  1. Victual (noun)

Meaning: food or provisions. (अन्न)

Synonyms: food, meal, viand

Sentence: “I can’t bear to see good victuals wasted, ” said Martha.

  1. Reassert (verb)

Meaning: to prove; confirm (साबित करना/ पुष्टि करना)

Synonyms: reaffirm, affirm, allege

Antonyms: disclaim, reject, abandon

Sentence: The Prime Minister aimed to reassert his authority.

  1. Trammel (noun)

Meaning: a restriction or impediment to someone’s freedom of action. (प्रतिबंध)

Synonyms: restraint, obstacle, barrier

Antonyms: freedom, latitude

Sentence: We will forge our own future, free from the trammels of materialism.

  1. Severance (noun)

Meaning: the action of ending a connection or relationship. (पृथक्करण)

Synonyms: sundering, split, separation

Antonyms: union, reconciliation

Sentence: The hardest thing to cope with was the severance from his family.

  1. Putative (adj.)

Meaning: generally considered or reputed to be. (ख्यात)

Synonyms: supposed, assumed, presumed

Antonyms: real, unlikely

Sentence: The putative reason for her dismissal was poor job performance.

  1. Iffy (adj.)

Meaning: full of uncertainty; doubtful. (अनिश्चितता)

Synonyms: doubtful, undecided, questionable

Antonyms: sure, convinced, certain

Sentence: Simon’s still kind of iffy about going to Columbia.

  1. Reclusive (adj.)

Meaning: avoiding the company of other people; solitary. (एकांतप्रिय)

Synonyms: solitary, secluded, isolated

Antonyms: gregarious, extroverted, talkative

Sentence: The reclusive woman was more than happy to spend her day off reading and writing at home.

  1. Reprehensible (adj.)

Meaning: deserving censure or condemnation. (निन्दा)

Synonyms: deplorable, disgraceful, discreditable

Antonyms: inoffensive, unobjectionable, faultless

Sentence: I find their behavior morally reprehensible.
