‘Vocabulary’
- Lambaste (verb)
Meaning: criticize (someone or something) harshly. (आलोचना करना)
Synonyms: criticize, castigate, chastise
Antonyms: acclaim, commend, compliment
Sentence: The professor lambasted me for my careless mistake.
- Symposium (noun)
Meaning: a conference or meeting to discuss a particular subject. (संगोष्ठी)
Synonyms: assembly, conclave, congregation
Sentence: He had been taking part in an international symposium on population.
- Ethnicity (noun)
Meaning: the fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition. (जातीयता)
Synonyms: clan, nation
Sentence: Ethnicity has a strong influence on community status relations.
- Abnegation (noun)
Meaning: the act of renouncing or rejecting something. (अस्वीकार)
Synonyms: renunciation, rejection, refusal
Antonyms: indulgence, self-indulgence, acceptance
Sentence: The couple’s sudden abnegation of life in the fast lane for work as missionaries stunned everyone.
- Insurrection (noun)
Meaning: a violent uprising against an authority or government. (विद्रोह)
Synonyms: rebellion, revolt, uprising
Antonyms: law, peace, order
Sentence: The insurrection was savagely put down.
- Dour (adj.)
Meaning: relentlessly severe, stern, or gloomy in manner or appearance. (कठोर)
Synonyms: stern, unsmiling, unfriendly
Antonyms: benign, friendly, gentle
Sentence: No wonder he looked so dour.
- Thronged (verb)
Meaning: (of a crowd) fill or be present in (a place or area). (भीड़)
Synonyms: mob, jostle, pack (into)
Sentence: Fans thronged the field to celebrate the win.
- Cordoned (verb)
Meaning: prevent access to or from an area or building by surrounding it with police or other guards. (घेराबंदी कर दी)
Synonyms: close off, seal off, tape off
Sentence: Police cordoned off part of the city centre.
- Tantamount (adj.)
Meaning: equivalent in seriousness to; virtually the same as. (समान)
Synonyms: equivalent to, equal to, amounting to
Antonyms: disparate, distinct, distinguishable
Sentence: This invasion is tantamount to a declaration of war.
- Ticklish (adj.)
Meaning: (of a situation or problem) difficult to deal with; requiring careful handling. (मुश्किल)
Synonyms: problematic, tricky, delicate
Antonyms: easy, simple, uncomplicated
Sentence: Handling awkward neighbours can be a ticklish business.
