The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  13th November 2021

  1. Roguish (adj.)

Meaning: characteristic of a dishonest or unprincipled person. (शातिर)

Synonyms: unprincipled, dishonest, deceitful

Antonyms: grave, grim, sedate

Sentence: He led a roguish and uncertain existence.

  1. Disdain (noun)

Meaning: the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one’s consideration or respect; contempt. (तिरस्कार)

Synonyms: contempt, scorn, scornfulness

Antonyms: admiration, esteem, respect

Sentence: He regards the political process with disdain.

  1. Sycophant (noun)

Meaning: a person who acts obsequiously toward someone important in order to gain advantage. (चापलूस)

Synonyms: toady, fawner, crawler

Sentence: The Prime Minister is surrounded by Sycophants.

  1. Derision (noun)

Meaning: contemptuous ridicule or mockery. (उपहास)

Synonyms: mockery, ridicule, jeering

Antonyms: applause, approval, commendation

Sentence: My stories were greeted with derision and disbelief.

  1. Dispensable (adj.)

Meaning: able to be replaced or done without; superfluous. (अनावश्यक)

Synonyms: expendable, disposable, inessential

Antonyms: essential, indispensable, necessary

Sentence: Delete what is dispensable and give more prominence to the essentials.

  1. Convoy (noun)

Meaning: a group of ships or vehicles traveling together, typically accompanied by armed troops, warships, or other vehicles for protection. (काफिले)

Synonyms: group, fleet, cavalcade

Sentence: The convoy was attacked by submarines.

  1. Vehemently (adv.)

Meaning: in a forceful, passionate, or intense manner; with great feeling. (जोरदार)

Synonyms: aggressive, assertive, dynamic

Antonyms: nonassertive, nonemphatic, unemphatic

Sentence: The entire community protested vehemently against the cuts.

  1. Undulate (verb)

Meaning: move or go with a smooth up-and-down motion. (लहराता)

Synonyms: rise and fall, surge, wave

Antonyms: efflux, motionlessness, lose.

Sentence: We soon see a field of wheat undulate in the breeze.

  1. Infidel (noun)

Meaning: a person who does not believe in religion or who adheres to a religion other than one’s own. (नास्तिक)

Synonyms: nonbeliever, heathen, pagan

Antonyms: believer, conformer, conformist

Sentence: They wanted to secure the Holy Places from the infidel.

  1. Gargantuan (adj.)

Meaning: unusually large (विशाल)

Synonyms: enormous, extremely big, extremely large

Antonyms: little, mini, petite

Sentence: Of all her mistakes, this was the most gargantuan.
