 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Taciturn (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) reserved or uncommunicative in speech; saying little. (अल्पभाषी)

Synonyms: untalkative, uncommunicative, reticent

Antonyms: blabby, chatty, talkative

Sentence: He was a quiet, almost taciturn, young man.

  1. Tractable (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) easy to control or influence. (विनयशील)

Synonyms: controllable, manageable, docile

Antonyms: contumacious, defiant, disobedient

Sentence: The issues have proved to be less tractable than expected.

  1. Sheepish (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or expression) showing embarrassment from shame or a lack of self-confidence. (शर्मीला)

Synonyms: embarrassed, uncomfortable, hangdog

Antonyms: extroverted, bold, dashing

Sentence: He came into the room looking distinctly sheepish.

  1. Inept (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing no skill; clumsy. (अयोग्य)

Synonyms: incompetent, unskillful, unskilled

Antonyms: capable, competent, expert

Sentence: I’ve never heard anyone so inept at making speeches.

  1. Prink (verb)

Meaning: spend time making minor adjustments to one’s appearance (सँवारना)

Synonyms: groom, tidy, beautify

Antonyms: disfigure, mess up, dull

Sentence: If I took as much time to prink as you do I believe I could fuss myself up to look like something.

  1. Gelid (adj.)

Meaning: icy; extremely cold. (ठंढा)

Synonyms: frozen, freezing, icy

Antonyms: ardent, blazing, boiling

Sentence: I can still recall that gelid winter morning, with the cold wind whistling around my ears

  1. Ordeal (noun)

Meaning: a painful or horrific experience, especially a protracted one. (अग्नि परीक्षा)

Synonyms: nightmare, trauma, painful experience

Antonyms: comfort, joy, peace

Sentence: Despite his ordeal, he seems to have suffered no ill effects.

  1. Usurp (verb)

Meaning: take (a position of power or importance) illegally or by force. (हड़पना)

Synonyms: seize, take over, expropriate

Antonyms: receive, inherit, accept

Sentence: He attempted to usurp the principal’s authority.

  1. Antagonism (noun)

Meaning: active hostility or opposition. (विरोध)

Synonyms: hostility, friction, enmity

Antonyms: friendship, goodwill, amity

Sentence: The new rules will create a lot of antagonisms.

  1. Pelt (verb)

Meaning: attack (someone) by repeatedly hurling things at them. (मारना)

Synonyms: bombard, shower, attack

Antonyms: defend, uncover

Sentence: The children pelt each other with snowballs.
